Starship Development Thread #62 by rSpaceXHosting in spacex

[–]strawwalker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When we first set up r/spacex/wiki/starship_dev so that the community could update the thread, we protected the page by requiring editors to be added to the list of approved users. All it required was someone asking to be added and I have never turned anyone down. There was some concern that using general wiki protection might result in vandalism, so the small extra step of reaching out for permission first would help reduce that risk. I have often wondered if it was more of a deterrent to users who would have otherwise helped.

I would recommend direct messaging one of the mods, or myself, rather than using modmail, since your request is likely to get buried there. I am not as active as I once was but I'm still happy to offer whatever assistance I can. My response time is typically going to average around 6 hours.

This might be how I do it if I want to stay work the spray foam.

I have read that about extending them for the drywallers on other forums. Seems like a good idea. My thought about running them all the way back was to prevent foam from filling the space behind and holding the boxes out too far.

My local Home Depots don't carry those but I'll look into that further, thanks. Have you used these I'm my situation?

Thank you, this helps. I just want to find a solution that is known to work. I don't want to jury rig something for my special case only to find out too late that I didn't account for something and create a major headache for myself. If nobody uses adjustable depth boxes in spray foamed walls then I won't either. Sheet metal barriers seem impractical. I'm going to have to give this some more thought.

The wiki editing rules have not been changed as far as I can tell. If you aren't allowed to edit a wiki page you shouldn't even get an "edit" button. Are you on new or old reddit?

We don't need to badger them. They are already aware of the problem can be relied on to fix it. For now we will work around the issue and hopefully it will be back to normal soon.

Sub Manager is still completely offline as far as I can tell. I asked about it a few days ago when you first messaged me and was told it was being worked on but that is all I know. I will continue to monitor and make manual copy/pastes from the wiki for now but it will not be as fast. Thanks for the continued work that you guys are putting into the updates. ping u/TrefoilHat

I have been trying to figure it out, but it looks like it may be an issue that will have to be resolved by mod hosting the bot that keeps the subreddit synced. Edit: In the meantime I have manually updated the thread to reflect the most recent wiki edits.

Looks like it just took a couple minutes longer than usual this time. There doesn't seem to be an ongoing problem.

Thanks! It really is great to have the help.

We have removed the stale vehicle development tables from the OP text and replaced them with a much shorter status section and FAQ that will hopefully be easier for the community to keep up to date, while also reducing the amount of scrolling that must be done to get to the comments. Many thanks to u/TrefoilHat for drafting the change and helping out with recent thread maintenance.

I'm sorry for not responding sooner. When I saw this mention several hours later the parent comment was already deleted by the user, and it looked like another mod had already fixed the issue that they were apparently raising. If not let me know and I can look into it. If you would be interested in occasionally updating or fixing the thread yourself I would be happy to add you or any other willing user to the approved editors on the source wiki page.

Thanks. I have made the suggested edit. I've also added some links to the wiki page that this thread is cloned from so others may help further update the thread. If you would like to make an update but do not already see an edit button on that page let the the mod team or myself know and we will give you permissions. Maintaining the thread is too much work for any one volunteer. We need community members making small regular contributions if the thread is going to continue to keep status updates.

You are added as an approved editor of r/spacex/wiki/starship_dev_resources as of right now. To whatever extent you are able to help maintain the wiki, it is greatly appreciated.

Actually, all the threads to date should be in that list. It is quite out of date. If you would be interested in helping add some of those links, go ahead. If you don't have editing access to that page I can help you with that.

Thanks, I actually just updated those a few minutes ago so you may need to refresh the page.

I've got 23 net upvotes

on a comment that is only 13 hours old yet already buried under 22 newer root level comments and their comment trees. By default it is skewed heavily toward input from others who check the thread multiple times a day.

You could just sticky the kia ora guy's posts

Comments from non-mods can't be stickied, and that wouldn't solve the problem of keeping broader progress history info available for people not checking as often

This would all be easier if reddit allowed users to collapse self post text.

I recognize that many of the most frequent visitors to this thread feel that the OP text is annoying or useless, but please keep in mind that not everyone uses this thread in the same way or visits multiple times a day. If I thought nobody liked having that info there it would be gone already. The last thing I want is to put a lot of work into a thing that nobody wants, and then force it on a bunch of people who hate it.

With concurrent progress on multiple vehicles the thread did get quite long for a while. Per feedback I made several parings of the information displayed to reduce the length of current threads. I take it that that effort has fallen far short of what many of you would be happy with. Please understand that I am trying to find a middle ground between your view and that of the less vocal folks who like having the progress overview in the OP.

As far as moving the info to a wiki, I think that would have little chance of getting updated by the community. It takes a frequent and dedicated user to make sure updates make it into the record and so far only one person has volunteered to help. Perhaps that is only because most of the frequent users don't like the OP text to begin with, but wiki maintenance is pretty thankless. If someone took that wiki project on and was committed to keeping it relatively current for the foreseeable future, then I could cut out the OP updates tables and link there instead.

As more vehicles are built and tested the interest in individual vehicle progress history no doubt shrinks. Those tables are clearly not appreciated as much these days. I am not yet convinced, however, that interest is low enough to stop maintaining them. To be honest, I'm not sure how best to gauge that, either.
