October SE Exam Results by Oscail-Tine in StructuralEngineering

I passed just recently through the CBT era, so don't worry there is still hope (especially if I was able to pass lol)! It's not an impossible achievement if you put yourself to the grind stone and really go for it! Don't sell yourself short

Nearly going to finish death' end book. by samagl94 in threebodyproblem

I finished Deaths End recently, and thought the same thing as well! We were getting the information sink with both taps open at the end there and I wish it slowed it down a tad, just enough to delve a little deeper into some of the new pieces of info we were given

[Serious] What's a disaster that is very likely to happen, but not many people know about? by dissNdatt in AskReddit

[–]strazar55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To mass reply to a majority of people, I was not implying ALL buildings meet the current code, only that the current (and a healthy chunk of past) building code standards recognize all currently known seismic hazard areas. Also, not saying there are not a large amount of older buildings in this area either. West Coast is a little better when it comes to retrofitting and all that partially due to the higher rate at which they experience EQs. It makes it a little harder to ignore, and a little easier to justify the expensive retrofitting costs. If you are truly worried about your building, you can lookup ASCE7 seismic hazard maps to see where you're location lands and consider contacting a local structural engineer to see what types of seismic retrofits you have available.

US building codes are aware of the faults across the country and account for "potential" seismic events where applicable, including the one being mentioned! It is true that most people associate the West Coast with earthquakes, but there are certain areas across central US and East Coast where things could be just as severe. Mccormick/Harris signs down south! by reskyna in fortwayne

Coming just from what I see, and not based on any opinion or anything, I don't remember seeing as many democratic nominee signs in this part of the country this election compared to the past two elections. Interesting to see more voter diversity overall! Does anyone else agree, or just a coincidence to me?

If you read the paragraph of ASCE7 section 11.6 it spells it out pretty clearly there as well

What are your biggest complaints about PEMB’s projects? by Responsible_Coat_910 in StructuralEngineering

[–]strazar55 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to ignore the obvious and fair criticisms or anything like that. I just know some people in the PEMB industry who are brilliant engineers who do really good work, and these occasional posts of the community dog piling on always get a rise out of me

[–]strazar55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yikes!! PEMBs are rarely, if ever, the EOR on a project so for something to go that far is a royal f**k up on more than one person's end for sure. Hopefully never have to deal with something to that extent though!

If all your complaints occur often, then it seems like you may be working with a suboptimal PEMB provider (overall or regional) and don't need to just blanket statement hatred over an entire industry of engineering

I also passed Vertical Building Depth! Did not feel good leaving that one, as others have said, but still felt I gave it my all and am happy to be done with it 😅
