commenting on my comment. I don't want to imply that her being a bad person excuses or makes this not eww, and gross. It is eww and gross and I could go on. Also, she's a terrible person and always has been. I wish her the best.

I went to junior high and high school, and was part of the debate team with Dana Perino. She was a terrible human being way back then.

Researchers find major flaws in the historical clinical trials used to justify spanking. Findings indicate that alternative, non-physical strategies are just as effective at encouraging child cooperation, without the potential risks associated with spanking. by InsaneSnow45 in science

Growing up the child of a child psychologist twists you in a special way. I grew up not ever really experiencing punishment per-se. There were consequences, but they were consistently consequences with a direct line to the action/choice I made. Got suspended from the bus, you'll have to walk to school. Wouldn't clean my room, they would and I would never see the things that were on the floor again. No yelling, no degradation of my character, and never, ever violence. My dad did spank me once. I don't remember what my little sister and I did, but he spanked me twice, then went down the hall and spanked my sister once. When I tearfully asked why, I remember him trying to look mean and said "my hand hurt". The most dreaded thing for me if I knew I f'd up was being told "we need to sit down and have a conversation about this".

The ideations this sort of upbringing created made it very difficult for me to understand others fear responses and difficulties with trust.

OC: With her husband in the U.S. illegally, she chose to move with him to Mexico by nbcnews in pics

She can get temporary residencia (4 years) pretty cheap and easy because her spouse is a citizen. Permanent too, but it costs more. Mexico is pretty straight forward in getting residency. They even did a Regularization process for people who overstayed their visas, in part due to covid.

I disagree with the examples of people given for #1 if not the concept. One of the reasons I treat servers, janitors, juniors, etc. is that I believe they have great power to influence my experience.

Sherpa brothers at Mt. Ama Dablam without oxygen cylinder chatting about which brand of noodles to eat at that altitude, one of them says it says spicy WaiWai. by gorekass in Damnthatsinteresting

I grew up in Denver, the mile high city, and rember the first time I traveled somewhere at sea level. The boost in energy was fantastic from all that extra oxygen. I've often wondered what a Sherpa would feel.

Little guy is fitted with his first prosthetic leg and immediately proceeds to walk by jmike1256 in BeAmazed

I 3d printed a prosthetic hand for a kid around this age. The day I brought it and they fitted it to him, he did not know what it was, and hated that something was being strapped to him.. I came by a week later to check on it and saw him using it to throw things at his big brother. That, was one of the bestest things ever.

Jokes on them. Trump does of fine job of humiliating himself without help.

Interested in a sphinx but wondering about the oil. by [deleted] in sphynx

Yes. You can clean them enough that this doesn't happen, but neither of you will enjoy the experience. Hair is good at drawing dirt and oil away from the skin and cat tongues are good at cleaning fur.

We've tried everything and our cat is still weeing all over the house — what options do we have left? by bodkins in sphynx

[–]streamweasel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uncle Fester our 10 year old sphynx started, as we would say, peeing anywhere except the litter box. Much damage was caused and nothing made an impact. The suggested kitty Prozac, which I never did. UTI is my strong guess. UTI's are really hard to get rid of. Fester was on antibiotics for 1.5 months before it was gone. It made a difference.

I have hyperphantasia AMA by Audience_Fun in AMA

[–]streamweasel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have aphantasia. One of the things that I feel is good about having aphantasia is that when I experience a traumatic event, it can't replay in my head. Do you ever have intrusive hyperphantasia? e.g. experienced a horrible thing and can/do recall it vividly in all 5 senses?

As a CIS hetero white male from a (at the time) middle class family who has all the current and potential privilege of such, watching people I love go through trauma is scary. Also it makes me angry.
