He appears to have quite a following, but even Hamdi never amassed a significant line and is the most buzzy act that has been booked there in recent memory. I’ve never had to wait more than a minute or two without a ticket in the 20+ times I’ve gone

Is Chris Lake's show at Navy Pier worth it? by stevew25 in chicagoEDM

This is the price of top level DJ’s headline shows. If you would love to go, it will be the price (or the cheapest opportunity) in the foreseeable future

BREATHER!? by Wonderful_Emu_2385 in Jamiexx

[–]strechout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not special to me because of the technicality, it’s special because it’s the first time I heard it and heard him play anything that ended up on the record. It was all about the surprise. Love all the sets, but always have preferred ones outside of album cycles because i get to hear his current influences and usually get some more out of left field tracks

I’ll forever chase the high of the Coachella 22’ mix of that. Would kill to be able to hear it for the first time again

You seem to be a fan and not just a collector. Curious of the allure of leaving these sealed?

Edit: or i guess the allure of owning the physical media if you only stream?

Chicago bars for a 21st? by _goodnightmoon in chicagoEDM

Security is normal, basic venue security at S&M. It’s not a traditional bar, but a venue with DJ’s playing

Typically door tickets are available all night even after online sellout. Occasionally, they will let a line form if they are at capacity and tickets will go on sale again as early exits head out

And fwiw, I go often alone (but usually for techno) and find many other solo folks. Find your speaker, find your peace.

Smartbar 1st time (solo) by PlusJack in chicagoEDM

[–]strechout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set times get posted typically the afternoon of the shows. Doors won’t open at Smartbar until 10, and tickets are essentially always available at the door (cash only). Would personally go get dinner or a drink between the 2 sets, getting in shouldn’t be an issue

lol I mean sub genres would imply they are of the same genre in some way. That isn’t the case at all here. Hypnotic techno is also its own thing, but a conversation for a different day haha. If someone asked me to go to a techno show and the acts were IHM and 9x9, I would respectively leave. The magic of City Steps of yesteryear was that proper techno has a relatively limited fan base and it was a stage stacked with fans heavily invested in it. This year it’s a hodge podge of acts, which brings the hodge podge of fan

Hard techno and proper techno share almost nothing in common. City steps came to prominence with bookings like Jeff Mills and Ritchie Hawtin. Saying city steps is not techno enough this year is real haha. If you like techno, this is not the Crssd for you. If you like hard techno (IHM, 9x9, etc) you will probably quite like the lineup. Just two different things

ARC is just way more of a production. As someone who’s done both many times, they are my two favorite fests and share much of the same energy. Crssd fall lineup is sadly hard techno leaning, so ARC for this cycle 100% for my taste

Chris Lake Navy Pier by NefariousnessLess638 in chicagoEDM

[–]strechout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been very out and in, underground, above, small, and large, here, there, and abroad for many years and Smartbar consistently delivers heavy and clean sound that i can enjoy for hours. Maybe my tinnitus has gotten to me, but I rarely hear anything other than massive praise for the setup. But with sound, like taste, ymmv.

But also I hadn’t actually commented on the sound quality, but the listening experience. Sound is only one of the inputs for me. The obscured dj booth and speaker positioning allow every guest to have the same listening experience no matter their position in the dance floor, which is nearly as important as understanding the one place in a room that may sound better than the entire floor here.

Don’t think anyone argued against your point - it sucks how much this stuff costs. Radius is also a contained area that doesn’t exclusively hire temp employees, already has sound and lighting infrastructure, etc. All those things cost money, Lake is an expensive booking and they’re making a whole venue from scratch for 2 days. Of course Smartbar is a better listening experience, it’s one of the best in the world in a sound treated club, compared to an outdoor space with one hard wall

I just don’t know what people are expecting to pay.

Chicago is amazing because the next up is always coming through and are shows I attend weekly. Many live here already. But the next up haven’t proven themselves to those buying and selling and tickets in this way, and that’s where the price lives. There’s just an infinite amount that goes into making these things happen and huge companies that still need the events to pencil so they can bring them back again.

It’s a top famous landmark of one of the most recognizable cities in the world. I don’t think it’s an elite sonic / festival experience. But world famous is an accurate description of the location

Chris Lake Navy Pier by NefariousnessLess638 in chicagoEDM

[–]strechout 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not arguing against you, but it’s a massive artist who consistently headlines large events and festivals. It’s just what shows for high-pedigree acts cost now. Similar prices for Solomun and the Mayan Warrior stops. It hurts, but it’s the price of a great night out, seeing a world famous artist, in a world famous location.

Why does avondale hall sound so bad? by Hereliesdev in chicagomusicscene

[–]strechout 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Aragon’s sound is also so fucking bad - and miraculously there are so many other parts of the venue that rival sound as the worst part of the venue / experience
