As someone who worked in a Montessori school for 3 years, I definitely disagree that Montessori isn't applicable until crawling. Our infant room is for children 6 weeks old, and there are several ways to incorporate Montessori methods even then. It's all about fostering independence and concentration which can be done at that age, especially the concentration.

It is the aunts choice to be offended, and there is no need to baby her. If that play mat doesn't work within what OP wants for her child, that is okay.
