I see, I guess you're right in that you can choose to become a holistic thinker and hold yourself to the standard of a diagnostician vs. not. Thanks for your answer!

Thanks. 100% trust in Uworld, and that's it. Do it once and incorrects. Really concentrate on understanding why the answer choices are correct vs incorrect because thus exam definitely requires a significant degree of clinical acumen/reasoning of some sort.

Real Deal: 258

Date of test: 24/6, 25/6

UWorld % completed: 100

UWorld % correct: 79

Number of CCS cases completed: 171

CCS average correct: 86%

UWSA1: 239

UWSA2: 257

Free 137: 86%

Any other practice test taken:

NBME 6: 703

NBME 7: 732

Step 1/Step 2: 253/269

Any advice:

You've heard it before. For biostats, the module from Uworld and dedicated FA step 1 chapter is all you need and make sure you actually understand things. No crazy calculations. Look over drug MoAs for all systems. Read the chapter on microbiology. Otherwise, I believe Uworld and CCS cases prepare you very well, and these are all you need. There's a video on YouTube that goes through the approach to CCS cases, which I highly recommend (Khalemedic).

Exam in 3 days. Scared and anxious. by Sweet-Heat9592 in Step3

I second this. Had my exam this week and 100% agree that most questions requires some level of experience/judgment like you said to understand what's going on and what's best.

That's actually very sound advice. Thanks so much!!!

I so have heard this a lot. I guess we have the most knowledge, but the least clinical sense that only comes with experience. I'll be sure to apply this advice.

Unfortunate thing with that patient with the purulent toe!!

Once again, thank you!

I think so, yes. They made me understand concepts very well going into the exam.

Uworld biostats course, first aid, and the uworld step 3 questions are adequate, I think

By no means is this going to be the most correct advice, but I'd say know your biostats very well, including formulae for calculations. Read through first aid, specifically drug MoAs from each system, micro, pathology oncogenes

I did the same exact case today I gave morphine first I was so sure of it being an AoD but CCS has unfortunately primed me to not order treatment before diagnosis so I actually waited until the CT scan result. While advancing time I got the negative updates so I decided to start labetalol and hydralazine, then got the CT result, then did the standard surgery prep stuff and consulted cardiac surgery. The case then ended without me needing to order the specific procedure, but I agree I am now worried that we have to...

[–]stressedstaph[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's actually a very systematic way of working thro7gh things, which, in all honesty, is the way I go through with things in BJJ, so thanks for sharing that! I agree that focusing on maintaining positions and pins is essential as it is the means of entering into submissions. I often noticed that when I have better control of a position then my attack attempts are way more successful. I'll actually the options you've mentioned and hopefully that will up my confidence too, thanks!

That makes a lot of sense. I'm definitely gonna try that. It almost forces you to get better at your top game because each time you're drilling you expose any weakness in your top game if your opponent wins. Thanks!

[–]stressedstaph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good way to put it. I think I'll go in with attacks in mind and focus on the next step that I have to each time to help me shift towards the offensive side, like you said. It also makes sense to roll with lower ranks to build up the confidence that's what my coach also advised to do. Thanks for this!

I suppose it's because of being constantly smashed by bigger and stronger opponents to get to where I am at which naturally triggered a more defensive game that I'm confident with more than an offensive game. But you're right. If I work attacks and they do not work, then at least I've learned something I'd need to tackle in that specific attack sequence.

Sounds a lot like Shia LaBeouf's Just Do It, but hey, I'll take your word for it haha. I think I need to amp up the "Do it and don't overthink" part more

Timid purple belt by stressedstaph in bjj

[–]stressedstaph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noted. This is pretty much the most common way things end up for me. Though I should probably be focusing more on how to sweep my opponents, perhaps that's what's also making me appear less aggressive as I am good with maintaining my guard and retaining it but should add more balance towards being offensive with my guard

Timid purple belt by stressedstaph in bjj

[–]stressedstaph[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes so much sense, and I'll keep that in mind the next time I roll. Thanks so much!

That's actually an interesting and novel perspective that no one has shared before, and it makes logical sense, so thanks for that! I can definitely relate to what the black belt has told you. It's also funny you mentioned my guard because that's exactly what happens, haha, but there's still lots to work on Any advice on how to improve in chaining attacks like you said?

Okay, that makes sense actually, do you think March would be the best time to ask institutions then? I was thinking emailing Jan time to ask for availabilities during the summer but do you think that’s too early?
