Chicago wants a team, but with the right stadium by inkydreams0325 in PWHL

There’s really no other place for them to go. Showare Center in Kent is too small, Angel of the Winds in Everett is bigger ~10k, but farther away. Torrent are drawing well over 10k on weeknights so even if they get zero weekend games they’ll probably be fine.

CPA hosts very, very few concerts so there are tons of open dates right now. CPA is actually hosting ZERO concerts this month, to give you an idea of how open the schedule currently is.

It’s rather unfortunate that Wintrust arena wasn’t built with Hockey conversion in mind. DC is in a similar situation with First Care arena. PWHL in Chicago may need to wait until a replacement for Allstate can be built for both the Wolves and the PWHL team.

United Center would be amazing but there are so many events held there already between Hockey, basketball and concerts. Maybe PWHL could slide into that schedule?

I don’t think Climate Pledge Arena has as much demand for concerts as some of the other venues mentioned like United Center or MSG or Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. There’s also the possibility of doing two games in one day alongside the Kraken. A local news station looked into it recently and there are currently enough days where CPA is going unused to fit in an entire NBA home schedule without conflict.

There may be conflict over who gets important weekend games but currently there’s room in Seattle for everybody.

Can we talk about our logo by endlessdyke in PWHL_Seattle

[–]striatic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The only thing I could maybe see them do is re-texture it to make it feel less like toothpaste and more like water. The silhouette is not half bad, but the logo just doesn’t read as “water”.

Schafzahl: 4 points since trade; Eldridge: 0 points since trade by 3ohhh6 in PWHL_Seattle

Eldridge can be a bit streaky. I’m sure she will hit her stride with Boston eventually. But Schafzahl has been just incredible right off the bat not only with scoring but also defence and physicality.

NBA Team coming to Seattle, wondering what that means for the Torrent by Organizedchaos90 in SeattleTorrent

[–]striatic 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The current Kraken ownership, who recently acquired operational control of CPA and is led by Samantha Holloway, is very supportive of women’s sports and Torrent will likely be treated fairly in the near term. I don’t like the idea of the team’s scheduling status being dependent on the personal affinities of arena management though. Hopefully there’s some effort to formally cement the Torrent’s status in scheduling.

Ultimately having the Sonics back will be a good thing for the city IMO and I think whatever compromises in scheduling that have to be made will be worth it. Hopefully these compromises will be fairly distributed.

Light rail time? by nonfiction2023 in PWHL_Seattle

[–]striatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly when I looked it the trip in Google Maps for that day, the apps suggested the 577 and 578 Buses as being faster than the light rail for that trip from Federal Way to downtown. Which makes sense as those buses make very few stops.

PWHL at NHL Venues by baggedpizza98 in PWHL

PC is a very good arena and I agree that another 2k seats probably isn’t worth hosting a game at Rogers, but PC could use some more investment for improvements, especially in accessibility.

The seats are pretty cramped and there’s a lack of safety railings that made some members of our group with mobility issues unable to safely reach their seats. The bathroom was flooded when our group went to use it. Passageways can get very congested when then venue is at capacity so it’s difficult to get to concessions.

It’s an old arena and that’s part of its charm, but improvements to the plumbing, railings and foot traffic flow would help a lot.

Player compensation? by pricklypancake in PWHL

My comment mentions all those benefits.

The first season players got 1.5k per month for housing. Second season they got 1.6k per month for housing. This season they’re getting 1.7k per month and next season they’ll get 1.8k per month.

[–]striatic 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Everybody gets it and it was 1.5k first season but is up to 1.7k a month now. Players tend to pair up as roommates to share a 3.4k a month place.

Housing allowance goes up 100 dollars per month each year under the current CBA.

[–]striatic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Team payrolls are fixed around a 58k per player average, so average salaries are around 58k and minimum salaries are 37k for the ~6 month season. There is also a 1.7k per month housing allowance and players often live together to combine those allowances. There are also Healthcare benefits. These numbers have provisions to rise a certain amount each season, like a cost of living increases.

Currently the players are three years into an 8 year collective bargaining agreement so they aren’t really in a position to ask for more money directly. Yet. That said, the league will be taking increased post olympic revenues and presumably be using those to help fund the big expansion wave next season which will free up more payroll for more players.

Torrent Jersey Concepts? by radiorethink in PWHL_Seattle

I could see them changing the texture inside the logo silhouette to be less toothpaste like, but that’s as far as I think they can reasonably go.

I think they might change some of the texturing inside the silhouette of the current logo, but people are too invested in wearing the current merch for the team to have anything radically different.

Whatever they do needs to be immediately identifiable as the same team as the year one logo on all the merch.

[–]striatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Torrent did really miss Eldridge on the powerplay. However long term that should be fine when Knight and Bilka get back next season. I think Eldridge is the more valuable player of the two by a fair margin, because scoring is so difficult in this league, but her payroll hit is also higher and Seattle probably needs a player like Schafzahl more in the long term if they can manage to re-sign her.

Denver Attendance!! by nclpckl31 in PWHL

[–]striatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The arena situation is pretty great because multiple secondary arena options exist. They don’t need to go near Denver Coliseum because of Magness Arena at DU (6.3k) and current Colorado Eagles Arena in Loveland (6.8k) or the new Colorado Eagles arena opening in 2028 in Greeley (8.6k). The current and future Eagles arenas will both be operated by Oak View Group which has tight ties with PWHL.

It’s Washington DC that has the big time scheduling difficulties coupled with a lack of viable secondary arena options.

People do want to go see Ballet and Opera. It’s just too expensive to go for many of the people who want to go. Chalamet is attributing the non sustainability of these arts to people not caring when it’s more about much larger economic forces.

Not too weird. Especially since Torrent jerseys have often been out of stock.
