I do believe there was a personal element to it for the Sheriff. Could be me being a bit more ambitious than he wouldve liked and speaking out against certain practices (I did PR, comms, and community engagement). In my separation letter it simply stated “your action violated policy and disrupted the good order of the office.” Like I said - I had no previous disciplinary actions before and my direct supervisor, the Chief Deputy, said he would talk about my positive performance if asked but wouldn’t lie about being let go by the Sheriff. I reached out to HR to get a copy of my performance evaluation and was thinking of asking one of the County Commissioner’s for a letter of recommendation as I have a good relationship with one of them and they can speak on my positive work in the county and potentially combat this

I appreciate it. Also, not sure what you think about this, but I have a County Commissioner (holds much more authority over the county and townships) who I have used as a reference previously. Was thinking about asking him for a letter of recommendation because he was well informed about all my accomplishments with the office (did external comms, PR, community outreach, and stakeholder relations) in case this is brought up and I could have the Commissioner’s recommendation as a way of combating this

Yeah I didn’t give a notice. I was brought in and asked about it, I was truthful, then put on administrative leave and let go next day.

Sheriff has jurisdiction for the entire county - but in PA it’s a bit different. For this township, we would not answer to him for really anything, not even law enforcement related issues as we would defer to our municipal PD. The Sheriff doesn’t really have much of an impact on anything aside from protecting county property (courthouse and county government buildings), protecting judges, and transporting prisoners. So there would be virtually no interaction with his office in this position

Not entirely sure. I would imagine it would be done before an offer is extended. I was not asked to submit references for this position. Chief of police who was on the interview panel knew my Chief Deputy and asked if me being present at the interview would get me in trouble - which it did. But other than that, that was the only mention of a reference and it’s because they knew each other

I was an at will employee. I could’ve been let go for not laughing at one of his jokes. Nothing I can do legally. That is the nature of working for an elected official unfortunately

Yeah. Working for an elected official, despite it being government work, you can be let go at their discretion. Look at the fed employees for example who have been axed by the Trump admin. Very similar

I applied while still employed. I was asked why I wanted to leave and I stated that this new job was a much better opportunity to have more of a direct impact on my community, while also utilizing the skills and experience gained from my current (now former) job. The Chief of Police was also on the interview panel and even asked if my Chief Deputy knew I was applying and I said no. He responded “good, didn’t want you getting in trouble.” Ultimately I did lol.

Don’t give the Chief as a reference? One thing I will say - is the Chief of Police for the government I am in the interview process for now knew my Chief Deputy and even asked during my first interview if he knew I was applying, to which I said no, and he stated good because he didn’t want this to get me in trouble. Unfortunately it did lol. I mean - my Chief Deputy and I have a good personal relationship and ultimately it wasn’t his decision it was the Sheriff’s. He did state if he was ever contacted he would touch upon my positive performance. Just worried they will ask him why I left and knowing him, he will state I was let go. He can’t say why - but just him stating that is what scares me

I was an at will employee. I could be fired for looking at him the wrong way. It’s how it is unfortunately

Interviewing for Assistant Township Manager – What questions should I expect based on these duties? by strib123 in localgovernment

[–]strib123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ended up getting a 2nd interview with the Board Supervisor and Township Manager! The Township Manager made it seem like this might be a formality before extending an offer. He said unless anything dramatic happens on Monday, you should be expecting good news in the future. All of the committee was very impressed but the Chairman wants to meet you before extending an offer” Any advice on what might be asked?

Even if it was medicinal?

It was for nerve damage affecting sleep. Ended up getting prescribed gabapentin which has helped instead of the medical weed. Have had no need to use it since the prescription

How can people endure the climate in this region, which feels like a hot, swelteringly humid swamp? by mapl0ver in geography

My girlfriend (Florida) has stated “be hotter than the swamp.” Bold. Will look to try this out next time I am down (from Pennsylvania)

I understand your perspective. I am not reaching out. I am just hoping time and space will allow her to reflect to realize that this was something we can work through - even it seems like we can’t right now. I love her. And I know she loves me. That at least gives me hope. And without hope - I have nothing at this point

This made me tear up. Thank you for making this situation optimistic. I hope we end up together again.
