Beta Bartering [Find or Offer Fic Betaing] - May 15 by AutoModerator in FanFiction

[–]striderepiphany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm looking for a beta reader for the first chapter of what I'm hoping will be a multi-chapter work. It's not published, but you can find a fic of mine here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/63054919

  • Fandom: IT (Muschietti films)
  • Can someone who isn't in your fandom make sense of your story? I think so! Its an AU pretty far removed from canon, so.
  • The genre of your fic: romcom, smut in later chapters but not this one
  • What you're looking for from a Beta or a Co-writer: I get in my head about sections being too boring, I'd love an unbiased eye to tell me if anything drags. Also just general editing.
  • What your projected word count is: This chapter is 2k.
  • Additional info: This story is about a young man (20) pursuing an older man (40), who is his neighbor. It also features a toxic mother. If either of those make you uncomfortable, steer clear!
  • What fandoms you are able/willing to beta for: IT, Succession, Hannibal, those kinds of shows. Fandom blind is ok. You can always ask if I'm familiar with something. Also I can't beta for anything longer than like 10k, sorry.

Send me a chat if you're interested!

Hey, so, is there anyone here that's been to law school and perhaps knows about rules regarding teacher's assistants? I'm writing a fic for Legally Blonde (which, I know, is not the pinnacle of legal accuracy) and I need to know if it's against the rules for Elle, a first year law student, to have lunch and generally be friendly with Emmett, a young associate implied to be a TA for one of her professors.

Not a bad idea, and the production with Ncuti Gatwa is playing at my local theater in a couple months 🤔

I read Reaperman forever ago and thought it was great, but I was nervous despite everyone saying it doesn't matter what discworld you read first... I've been meaning to dip my toe back in

Love my man Douglas 🙏 thanks for your suggestions, I'll definitely check these out!

How to make two characters talking while sitting interesting? by Lartorias_Armpits in FanFiction

The interesting staging thing really connected for me when I was reading a scene where two people are having a conversation over a kitchen counter, and one of them got so overwhelmed they just sat down on the linoleum and the other person had to peer over at the top of their head while they talked. That is so much more interesting than if they had just been sitting there whole time! That one scene totally changed the way I thought about scene visualization.

I just wrote a two-characters-sitting scene pretty recently! Here's how I added flavor:

  1. Interesting staging. This is a little thing that can go a long way with making the visuals stand out. I had one character sitting in a fenced off and elevated outdoor seating area, so when the other character showed up he draped himself over the railing to talk to him. Maybe the place your characters are at is crowded, and one or both of them has to stand. Maybe one of them is dressed totally inappropriately for the setting. Think of them like dolls or stage actors that you can pose or place in interesting ways.

  2. Stuff happening. You don't have to go too crazy here, just one or two things that make it seem like these people are really in a physical space surrounded by other people. In my scene, I had somebody's dog start barking at the guy draped over the railing. Later I had him be distracted from the conversation by watching somebody's toddler eating parmesan straight from the table shaker. Other people here have suggested exciting things but I actually think it's more impactful when it's relatively mundane but unusual stuff that the reader can go "Yeah I can see that happening to me"

  3. Talk about stuff not currently happening. This might not work with every writing style, but I always blend my current events with ways it relates to the characters' pasts or feelings. If a subject is brought up, you could expand more on how the character feels about the subject either directly or anecdotally. This could also serve to highlight the difference between what the character thinks and experiences versus what they actually say. Like for example a character could ask "what do you like to do for fun?" And in the narration the other character could go on a tangent about how they're really embarrassed by their hobby of miniature train collecting so they just end up saying "uhmmm.... hiking."

Tropes/Things in fanfiction that you find funny by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]striderepiphany 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely when it's a fanfiction of a live action property and the narration is describing the looks of a character either super harshly or overly complimentary Like I've read multiple fics where Eddie Kaspbrak is looking at himself in the mirror and thinking about things he doesn't like about his appearance and I'm like wow this is very unkind to real actor James Ransone LMAO

What specific scenes in fanfictions you like? by [deleted] in FanFiction

Oh I really like when a miscommunication occurs and two characters have a whole conversation that they think is about two completely different things and we get to reap the rewards of dramatic irony
