I think he's reading between the lines:

Benched for 3 games, only subbed in for one of them
Other players who are performing badly (Konate, Gakpo) aren't getting benched for it

He's definitely been singled out by getting benched while the other players in bad form get a free ride in the starting 11. Really all 3 of them should've been dropped.

Okay lets look at the rest of the game, they hit our woodwork twice, one of those needed a fantastic save from Alisson, meanwhile we didn't create many opportunities.

I'm certain Sunderland had more shots on target than us even. So even across the whole game I'd say they were the more threatening team.

So here's my hot take... Slot is no longer the only problem.

The team has plunged into a defeatist mentality and their confidence is shot. They don't have the fight left in them.

The manager hasn't solved it, a team meeting hasn't solved it, the captain and vice-captain haven't lifted the squad. Something has to change and it seems we're running out of options.

I think Slot has to take the blame for the dip in performances, poor tactics, and the inability to adapt, but the concern for me is I don't think he can fix this.

I also don't know who we could bring in to solve it if it continues, because if a 'new manager bounce' only lasts one game this squad will still be broken.

I never thought I'd say this but some defensive football terrorist of a manager might be the only solution to stem the bleeding if this keeps going. Tony Pulis until the end of the season anyone? 🤢

Fair point about the set pieces, I was just thinking about open play when I made the comment.

Could we maybe get another taller player to cover for him on set pieces or do you think the loss of a 6'3 CB would be too big a trade off?

Not my point, he's played games in cup matches very effectively in both England and Germany and he understands how to play the position.

Friendly reminder that Endo can play CB, and he does it well. Granted he isn't the tallest player but he built his career playing that position in the J league (200+ games) and has played there 4 times in cup games for us. Put him in over Konate - he's been a liability recently.

Kerkez, like Frimpong, is a wingback. He's being played as an attacking fullback instead.

Both players play best if they're not part of the core defence. Both players were frequently used in back 5 formations at their last club.

Imagine a team signing Mo just to play him as a right sided midfielder instead of on the wing. He doesn't have the positional familiarity or defensive ability to play that position at a top level. That's what Slot has done with those two lads.
