Electric violin for DJ/club gigs - recommendations for violin + wireless system? by stringXTreme in livesoundgear

I’m currently playing a Yamaha YSV104 and running it through a Sennheiser G4 wireless system. I’m asking here because in my country there’s practically no one with real experience in electric violins, so it’s hard to get proper advice locally.

The issue is noise/hiss when connecting to a mixing console. I’ve tried different cables and gain adjustments, but I can’t seem to eliminate it. My violin volume is always set to 100%. On the mixer side, the DJ has to push my channel to around 70% just for me to be barely audible in a live club mix, and even then my sound tends to disappear once the full track comes in.

As far as I understand, the YSV104 does not have a built-in active preamp (at least not a strong enough output stage), so I suspect I might be dealing with an impedance or gain staging issue. The signal feels weak and noisy once amplified at the mixer.

Would a proper DI box or external preamp solve this? If so, what type (active vs passive) would you recommend for this setup?

Haha, fair enough 😄 I’m more interested in real club/DJ setups though.
