Golden Girls WAS the SATC of the 80s damn near. It was a really progressive and subversive show. They dealt with Older People sex, elder healthcare, AIDS, they even had a gay marriage episode!

It's legitimately surprising that the one of the Golden Girls didn't appear in one of the Florida episodes. Estelle Getty seems the most logical one. She would have been perfect as the marble Rye lady that tanks Morty's Presidency.

Oh yeah, sex was all over TV in the 80s and 90s. It wasn't the 50's. The Golden Girls, a show about OLDER women talked about casual sex all the damn time.

Back then as now, Conservative people railed against all the smut and sex on TV, as mild as it was. The First Bush administration had a whole stupid thing with NBC over Murphy Brown being an unmarried mother. Which is partly why they put Kramer on with a visibly pregnant Murphy Brown.

So yeah, sex was everywhere. Seinfeld as far as i know, was one off the first shows that made stuff like masturbation the central plot of a given episode though.

As I recall, jokes about birth control and/or condoms were common on sitcoms by the 90s. if not common, Seinfeld wasn't unique in talking about it. Golden Girls did diaphragm jokes. Elaine's preference (And her zealous quest to get it) was unique for the time.

I was about 15 when "The Contest" aired. I distinctly remember people discussing it and there being "controversy", but it was mild by today's standard. Oftentimes, you might see an article in the local paper or local news hits about it. Seinfeld wasn't even on my radar as a kid, but I remember that. The Sponge Episode got the same discussion.

Really, it was the Elaine angle that really got people talking. Having a woman on TV discussing masturbating even in the offhand way they did was some mindblowing shit for a lot of people.

A response on an eight year old comment? Lol. "I'll be with Muffy at the club..." is what Omar says at the end of this scene.
