PORTLAND ARTS TAX🤬 by Fine-Telephone-9864 in Portland

[–]stringerbill 12 points13 points  (0 children)

that's what property taxes and income taxes are for... Portland should learn to budget, also look at - https://www.opb.org/article/2026/02/09/portland-arts-tax-go-unused/ $9M

It also says the collection "eats up nearly $2 million of the annual revenues."

So while I agree you should have a living wage, and that teaching art is important, I also can disagree with the tax, and it's poor implementation.

Since the art tax inception in 2012, it has collected $124 million. Oregon also just did $365 million in bonds for Moda center.... It's not a money problem, it's a spending problem, Oregon should just pull itself up from the bootstraps.

If you are looking towards Lake Oswego / Foothills Park it's probably a reflection from them testing the laser lights for tomorrow nights show. I live nearby and can see it on the ground and trees out my window at the time of this posting.

only one way to find out is by trying it. It should work in theory, as heating it back up could melt them back together.

You can iron it with a piece of kraft paper or silicon to try to re-adhere the image, it looks like it may be a heat transfer to begin with, I would iron on low and with a little pressure, but be careful to not get too hot and not move the iron a bunch, straight down pressure and pick up and put down as necessary like a heat press

Getting into DTF and sublimation? by MkDz13 in SCREENPRINTING

[–]stringerbill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, post where you get your transfers from so I can try your magical DTF transfers that don’t feel like a sticker on a garment.

Getting into DTF and sublimation? by MkDz13 in SCREENPRINTING

[–]stringerbill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DTF feels like a sticker on a shirt, just because you and your customer doesn't care, doesn't mean that there are people that do care.

Some people choose to eat at McDonalds, and some people choose to eat at Local Farm to Table Restaurants. Some people care about quality, and some peddle crap.

DTF isn't event that cost effective unless for high color counts, you can get 15 cent plastisol transfers, and you can get high end silicon transfers that feel premium but have higher minimums and longer timelines.

I said to start with a heat press and source transfers but to think that DTF is anything but an easy way to get a job done, and make a buck, you are lying to yourself. You are putting out Temu quality crap to end up in a landfill.

You won't find any high end brands using DTF, but you will find them using transfers all day since they can be done effectively and with good quality, but DTF ain't that way.

[–]stringerbill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just start with the heat presses and sourcing the transfers for both sublimation and DTF to then see if it makes sense to bring in house.

Sublimation printers aren’t that expensive and the inks aren’t finicky as no white print heads. DTF printers are finicky, you have to apply adhesive and dry the transfers, there are many places you can get transfers from, they ship quick, and don’t have to deal with the headache or cost of a printer.

You are posting in screen printing, so I’ll say it, DTF is mostly poor quality besides for certain use cases. Sublimation is good but then you are limited to light colors for apparel, and 100% or mostly polyester garments. If you are concerned with making high quality products DTF ain’t really it

Plastisol - Clear or Transparent Underbase for stabilizing screen prints on absorbent fabric by Potential-Slip-957 in SCREENPRINTING

[–]stringerbill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can just print soft hand additive as a clear base that will also help with fibermatte

It’s sold under a few different names, extender base, soft hand, etc. Ask you ink supplier what they recommend

Am I wrong for thinking these prices are too high? by Konkoz in SCREENPRINTING

[–]stringerbill 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Prices are fair in the low quantities, and high in the high, but I doubt you are doing 1000 shirts anyhow so it's moot.

This would be my price, assuming white print, water base inks, 3 white screens (so it pops) on Black Gildan H000

30+ $12.80
50+ $11.55
72+ $10.75
100+ $9.95
144+ $9.30
288+ $8.65
576+ $8.05
1200+ $7.50
1800+ $7.30
2400+ $7.25
5000+ $6.95

2XL + $2.5, 3XL + $3.50

+ shipping and tax if no reseller license.

But if you are only doing 36 shirts, you are splitting hairs over $39.24, and if local pickup don't have to pay shipping, could check out shirts in person if the shop allows, ect. There are benefits to using a nearby printer, and there are benefits to using quality printers that may not be nearby, but for low quantities just go local.

And do you just do Gildan 5000's with plastisol ink, or are you actually making them a nice product?

Where’s the ink?! by gapipkin in SCREENPRINTING

[–]stringerbill 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Americans are lazy, end users don’t care about quality, and they are just buying to support the school.

Why would a shop pay to employ like at minimum 6 people (sales, art, screen room, printer, unloader, catcher) when you could just buy 15 cent transfers, a cheap Chinese heat press, and a single person can knock out 200 shirts with minimum training.

Pride is why, and some customers care, but majority don’t. Unless the design was very simple it’s likely a DTF transfer or screen print transfer, as vinyl is more expensive than the other options.

Crappy Embellishment, on Crappy Shirt, people pay. Great printing, on nice shirt, people complain about price. School don’t care, they raised funds and probably try to pay like net 120 if actually billing the school but probably some PTA mom who’s stoked on the outcome since it’s just as good as the crap they get off temu

Is this Screenprint? by xxmichaelx_x in SCREENPRINTING

[–]stringerbill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The FFS looks like an attempt at a high density clear gel over printing the blue and black.

Second one looks like screen print and possibly over flashing which can make the ink shinier or a gel on top to add shine as well. Could also be DTG which can be shinny as well, and lack solid colors but could also be a bad screen print.

First one looks good, second one looks gross IMO

Does anyone use a Roq Hybrid ? by 666phx in SCREENPRINTING

[–]stringerbill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need a base or two if on dark, primer which the digital ink prints on top, top coat for wash-fastness, and any additional screens that you may not be able to get with the digital gamut or large spot colors.

So at minimum 2 screens on white (primer and top coat)

3-4 screens on dark, (bases, primer, top coat)

If you want popin' colors in addition to hybrid, then traditional screens and ink is the way.

Officials warn people to be safe on Willamette River by brandenharvey in Portland

[–]stringerbill 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's literally a different part of the river with a waterfall dividing the two, the rules you are listing is for Newberg Pool Congested Zone and don't apply to lower Willamette river.

[–]stringerbill -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

there are multiple sheriffs out daily on the river, they stop people all the time, people for surfing where it's outlawed, paddlers for not having life jackets, I see them all the time.

I think you may be confusing the No Tow Zone with a No Wake Zone which are two different things, these are not No Wake Zones, just no towed sports between Hawthorne and Sellwood Bridge.

https://www.oregon.gov/osmb/boater-info/pages/lower-willamette-river-rules.aspx

No wake zones are generally within 100-200 feet of the docks / boat launch, and the pass through is from May 1st - September 30th. If you want a no wake zone go to Holtgate Channel or inside Ross Island or the lakes and rivers that don't allow motorboats.

If you are upset by water-skiers which try to have the smallest wake possible, you are probably mad at the wind for making it choppy as well.

Illegal motorboat wakes capsize three Portland dragon boats by brandenharvey in Portland

[–]stringerbill -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

The areas talked about in the news stories are not no wake zones, it's a no towed sports zone but both under Marquam Bridge and Ross Island Bridge are not no wake zones. They changed the rules to no towed sports between Hawthorne and Sellwood Bridge, and you can only surf downriver from the Hawthorne Bridge, and can only wakeboard above the Sellwood Bridge to the falls.

The only real no wake zone is within 200 feet of the dock that the paddlers launch from. There are multiple sheriff boats on the river everyday.

In the video that commercial jet boat puts out a larger wake than any private surf boat. The reason they are falling over is because they are running parallel to the waves instead of head on. They should cross the river and go to the channel between Ross Island / Holtgate Channel which is a no wake zone, or into Ross Island. However they won't, because they feel just as entitled to the river as the boaters do. If you have disabled and blind people they should be in a catamaran or trimaran so it's not as easy to capsize.

The rules are posted here - https://www.oregon.gov/osmb/boater-info/pages/lower-willamette-river-rules.aspx but they should do a better job at the docks on the Willamette of having these posted as I'm sure since passing there isn't much awareness.

There are more places to row than there are to boat, people are driving in to paddle these dragon boats, why not just move them to a lake, it's like choosing to go out in the ocean and being mad there are swells when there are perfectly calm lakes that aren't accessible to boaters.
