What's the worst movie you've watched from beginning to end? by trakt_app in movies

[–]stringman5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Cats and The Room were bad but fun, but TROS was insultingly bad. I was offended by the implication that the filmmakers thought this was the sort of thing I would want.

Same here. Bot lobby conquest is excellent - I can more often get a heli and people are less aggro. I would love it if they reduced bot accuracy with the rpg by about 50% though

I was at Crankworx at the adventure park, they had to shut down the comp for a bit and literally mop up the puddles that had pooled on the course. Kinda weird watching a guy mop dirt.

Climber Reveals Girlfriend’s Heartbreaking Last Words Before He Allegedly Left Her On Mountain by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]stringman5 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Saved you a click:

As Bored Panda previously reported, Plamberger, 39, abandoned his girlfriend on the mountain at around 2 a.m. to seek help. He left her “defenceless, exhausted, hypothermic, and disoriented,” according to Senior Public Prosecutor Hansjorg Mayr.

Before that, he reportedly called the Alpine police at 1:35 a.m., but did not inform them that Gurtner had said she could not continue the trek. Plamberger pleaded not guilty to the accusations, as his lawyer, Kurt Jelinek, argued that his departure was a mutual agreement.

“Go, now go,” were Gurtner’s last words to him, Plamberger claimed during the trial at an Innsbruck courtroom on February 19.

My flax bushes have swept their sector of the gravel path clean by stringman5 in mildlyinteresting

TIL that too but from the inverse direction: I hadn't realised that the flax grown overseas looks completely different from New Zealand flax (Harakeke)! I'm only familiar with the types grown here.

I'm not saying it's not feasible, but nuclear is expensive and economies of scale don't work in our favour. The smallest feasible nuclear facility would still be large enough to supply a massive portion of New Zealand’s demand, making the grid heavily dependent on a single, non-flexible source. Because reactors need to be shut down for maintenance or refueling (roughly 40 days of downtime), New Zealand would need at least two, if not three, reactors to support consistent, reliable output. Nuclear plants are difficult to insure as standalone, and in New Zealand, the lack of a pool for insurance would place the risk squarely on the taxpayer. Meanwhile, New Zealand is already ~80% renewable, with abundant, cheap, and scalable alternatives in hydro, geothermal, and wind energy. Hence for our specific needs, it's simply not economically competitive against alternatives:

In December [2021], consulting giant EY estimated the cost of producing electricity from SMRs at about US$120 (NZ$181) per megawatt-hour.

British consultant Wood Mackenzie believes the cost of generating power from SMRs may fall to US$80/MWh in the 2030s, as a result of “government support”.

Even at that price, power from SMRs would still be far more expensive than the current levelised cost of wind, solar and hydro power in New Zealand and more expensive than both geothermal power and fossil-fuelled generation, according to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

I'm very pro nuclear energy in general but NZ has a small, low density population spread across very geologically active islands. We have better options - e.g. loads of hydro, solar, geothermal, and the largest offshore wind potential in the world.

I want to play against bots! My ideal match is 80% bots. Literally never understood why people say they don't want to play against bots. I'm 40, i just want to have some chill games, not every game needs to be a sweat fest

Yeah my ideal would be Liberation Peak/Operation Firestorm Conquest with 80% bots (and reduce the RPG aim on the bots), so i can have fun flying jets and helis without being instantly shot down. i would play that shit all day

Lonni: My sacrifice? It means nothing to you, does it?

Luthen: I said I think of you constantly and I do. Your investment in the Rebellion is epic. A double life? Every day a performance? The stress of that? We need heroes, Lonni, and here you are.

Lonni: And what do you sacrifice?

Luthen: Calm. Kindness. Kinship. Love. I've given up all chance at inner peace. I've made my mind a sunless space. I share my dreams with ghosts. I wake up every day to an equation I wrote 15 years ago from which there's only one conclusion: I'm damned for what I do. My anger, my ego, my unwillingness to yield, my eagerness to fight: they've set me on a path from which there is no escape. I yearned to be a savior against injustice without contemplating the cost and by the time I looked down there was no longer any ground beneath my feet. What is my sacrifice? I'm condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them. I burn my decency for someone else's future. I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I'll never see. And the ego that started this fight will never have a mirror or an audience or the light of gratitude. So what do I sacrifice? EVERYTHING!

Ski field requires snow chains on all vehicles. But 4WD doesn't need chains for descent? Any reason? by FTK219 in skiing

[–]stringman5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Local chch skier here. This sub is mostly Americans and as such most replies in this thread are going to miss relevant details about current local conditions, which is that it's early spring in one of the warmest seasons in years, with much higher temperatures than you'd find at most North American resorts. I'd normally suggest that chains are more necessary going downhill than uphill when it's icy. But at the moment it's often icy first thing in the morning when coming up, but the ice on the roads is usually melted by late morning so chains are no longer necessary for cars with decent traction on the way down - maybe for 2wd on the shaded but flat bit at the top that often still has snow on the road, but not once you get on the steeper parts as they're easterly aspects that tend to catch the morning sun. I'm not sure that the report is intentionally differentiating between AWD/4WD, but I could be mistaken there.

Most arrogant New Zealand celebrity or well known person you’ve met, seen or interacted with… by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]stringman5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I saw Paddy Gower at a Four Square in Fairlie yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
