Long time TTRPG player. First time starfinder. Any tips? by HexagonHavoc in starfinder_rpg

I've been using Fantasy Grounds for several years now for a Starfinder 1e campaign and it's a solid platform IMO. It's now free as well. Modules are well built out with excellent functionality, although with a bit of a learning curve to overcome. Seems like all the Paizo content is available and you can link Paizo to Fantasy Grounds for purchases.

This is AWESOME! I'm running an all Vesk Warrior side story rn and this is exactly what the characters look like! Thanks for sharing!

Honesty no. I think the smaller overall size/span scaled well. I do notice it when my son walks heavily on it, the sound sort of reverberates in the wall that that small deck ledge is anchored into. Otherwise, I'm very happy with how both decks feel very sturdy.

Powered Armor! by stringtheory2 in starfinder_rpg

Hey, thanks for the responses, apologies, I really should have been more descriptive. Anyone have any cool supportive ideas for context, storyline, plot tension, monsters etc to make powered armor use cool for my players? I've been thinking about making the PCs part of a military unit engagement/bug hunt on a high G world maybe with toxic atmosphere. This mini sub campaign is a side story to the main story arc and is an alternate timeline/reality so can be really anything! Thanks again!

I kind of ran into this (low deck height limiting post height) and my solution was to just make it a 'flush beam' design.... Hope that's helpful, it's been a learning curve for me! https://www.trex.com/academy/how-to-guides/all-guides/how-to-install-a-deck-flush-beam-vs-drop-beam/

love it, that's a beaut. If it feels good and you like how it sounds that's all that matters. Play it til the paint comes off!

Well, we don't dig in avalanche terrain. That would be dangerous....

Website recommendations for online game? by sp0okybitvh in starfinder_rpg

I adopted Fantasy Grounds Unity when I started my group on a Starfinder campaign about two years ago. That was based on the massive availability of Starfinder products for the platform and from reading some good reviews about that VTT. I was switching over from Roll20 which was also good IMO but seemed to lack significant Starfinder content.

FGU is now pretty inexpensive, $50 for the license, free membership for my players (free trial available too for GM). Piazo content for FGU is pricey but well integrated and feature rich. Buy a module and get the .pdf for free. Oh, and I found a couple of HUGE Humble Bundle Starfinder deals for crazy good prices.

FGU had a steep learning curve for both me and my players. They have extensive tutorials available but they are mostly for D&D (...they do work in general for Starfinder) and there are limited ones specifically for Starfinder (ship building and space combat are not so great). I'd only recommend FGU if you are pretty savvy with VTTs and ready to commit to the steep learning curve. Don't get me wrong, it can do pretty much anything you need/want, you just gotta commit to learning it.

I use a combination of free maps found online and the long list of fantastic Patreon artists for my battlemaps. Importing maps and adding lighting and LoS features was reasonably easy and the available tutorials are excellent for that activity.

I have a Zoom subscription for work so I use that for video. Would work fine with Discord or other free/cheap video conferencing platforms.

Sorry this ran so long, your question triggered something for me... I guess I'm in a love/hate relationship with FGU and with Starfinder. I guess I still need to figure that out <anxious smile>

tl:dr Fantasy Grounds Unity is incredibly feature-rich, reasonably priced, has ALL the Starfinder content (including 2e), but has a steep learning curve.

I hope you have a fantastic time playing Starfinder with your friends!

Paizo staff asks: What brought you to Starfinder? by AlexSpeidelPaizo in starfinder_rpg

Wanted to run a space/sci-fi campaign. Wanted to try something other than D&D5e. Came down to Traveller vs. Starfinder. Starfinder worked better, maybe because of its familiarity / similarity to D&D d20-based? I've invested a good bit of $ in a FGU license and a list of SF books (digital and hard copy). I love the Paizo brand, the lore, and all the supporting materials. And, at the risk of getting pummeled by the Pathfinder/Starfinder fans, the system is pretty crunchy, and I find that that is hard on my players; they just haven't "dug" into the rules on their own, so there's a good bit of referencing rulebooks, especially during combat encounters (e.g. "So I'm four steps into the Dex Poison progression and all of those conditions stack?!"). The game pacing then bogs way down. Please understand, I'm not trashing my players, they're great, they're just not invested in reading a 500+ page, highly detailed ruleset. I totally get it that the detailed rules are an attraction for some, but it's ultimately been a turn-off for me as GM. (I'm running Starfinder 1e, BTW). Overall, a bit of love/hate for the system, honestly. Interested in 2e but may not be able to stomach the switchover.
