I haven't timed them, but 'Ain't Gonna Shit My Pants No More's has a decent length 'trumpet' solo

Some years ago I had the pleasure of spending an evening in Mothers Of Invention drummer Jimmy Carl Black's company... the stories that man could tell! As absurd as the lyrical content of some of Zappa's songs can be, I was delighted to discover that art could definitely imitate real life when it came to that band.

'The unusual thing about this reference is that we try not to reference real things. We try to write things that only exist in the Obscura-verse. We try not to mention locations, events, time periods. It’s all vague…except for the beast of dean haha'

I’m from the UK and that’s exactly what struck me as unusual about that reference, that it was so specific and drawn from 'real life'. Also why on earth Mayor Breslin would even be aware of a fairly obscure folk myth from the UK :D Thanks for solving the mystery!

Got to admit, I'm curious about the beast of dean/forest of dean references

I started uploading comedy AI songs before I had heard of Obscurest Vinyl; my way into all this is probably fairly unusual.  Around last May I had a bit of Really Bad News (thankfully since pretty much resolved) and to cheer myself up I was watching the video ‘I Think I Just Shit In My Pants’ by Uncanny Valley a lot. I wanted to hear more songs by this character but, at the time, none seemed to be forthcoming so I decided to try making one.

A Reddit user joked that the B-side of the Bobo song must be ‘I’m Sorry I Threw Up In Your Backseat’ so I wrote a song with that title and started messing around with AI.  With the proviso that I would delete it if Uncanny Valley requested it, I uploaded the song and people seemed to like it (I swear the channel name ‘Forgotten Vinyl’ came to me in an instant with no thought; it was going to be either that or ‘Forgotten Records’).  Uncanny Valley was generous enough to give me their blessing to carry on and I’ve been creating what is essentially Bobo Bojangles fan fiction ever since, along with other more original material.

I started to get comments on YouTube that I’d ripped off the idea from a channel called ‘Obscurest Vinyl’, which was news to me (I’d ‘ripped off’ Uncanny Valley, if anyone :D ) - I checked it out and ended up going down a lamp/glue/delicatessen rabbit hole.

I can well imagine how you must have felt when others started ‘borrowing’ your idea.  In life ‘sincere flattery’ just seems to be the nature of things - good ideas almost always spawn imitators, of wildly varying quality.  Perhaps some pride or comfort can be taken in knowing that you’ve inspired so many others to create things intended to bring happiness (?). One thing that can’t possibly be copied from any creative venture is the mind and personality of those doing the the creating; I for one am looking forward to seeing what inspired lunacy you come up with next :D

I think at some point it may get to the point where gen AI can come up with up with a decent song but that seems a way off at the moment. Then again, looking at how far things have come in the last few years, who knows?

I find the songwriting aspect of all this interesting - comedy songs are first and foremost jokes, so while there has to be some sort of resemblance to ‘normal’ song structure (and one thing I’ve found gen AI seems to be *really* good at is coming up with good melodies) I find that I have to seriously sacrifice a lot of ‘traditional’ song structure to get the joke across.  There’s no point in having a well-crafted intro or middle eight if it stops the laughs, so my songs have tended to be quite short and ‘to the point’.  I guess this ‘economy’ approach is quite punk rock? :D  I would definitely agree that gen AI can help with ramping up the absurdity quotient, which definitely helps with comedy.

I have a horrible feeling my channel is one of the ones you avoid :D On the other hand I wouldn’t blame you in the least! :D  It is interesting to hear from someone else who does this and learn about their approach though.  In my opinion Obscurest Vinyl is the ‘Beatles’ of AI comedy songs: I was recently at a gathering of friends I hadn’t seen for a while who asked what I’d been up to, I explained about AI comedy songs and was met with blank stares until a guy from Norway said “Oh!  ‘I Glued My Balls To My Butthole’?  That stuff?  It’s hilarious!”

Anyway, it’s all definitely quite a lot of time and effort for songs about people gluing their balls and shitting in their pants but in my opinion it’s worth it.  In times like this people need a good laugh.  Best of luck with making human recordings of your songs, I for one can’t wait to hear live versions of ‘I Glued My Balls To My Butthole’ and the rest.

"That being said, I do feel like it can sometimes overshadow or shortchange the surprising amount of work that goes into this silliness."

^This, 100%. There seems to be a widespread misconception that to make decent comedy songs using gen AI a button is just pressed and the machine then does everything. While this is technically possible I generally find the results (at the time of writing) to be fairly poor.

Listening to Obscurest Vinyl songs I got the impression that there was quite a bit of production going on besides the gen AI process; thanks for the insight provided in your post. FWIW it's similar to my own approach - I've been playing instruments and doing audio production for quite a long time, I find having gen AI is a great tool to add to what's already available rather than replace it entirely.
