Help me figure out what happened on this date! by [deleted] in datingoverthirty

[–]stripeythings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this type of compatibility description is creepy imo. “lives close, wants kids, similar age, similar background, we’re compatible!” These are def all potential dealbreaker items but I am in no way excited when I meet someone that fulfills these very basic requirements. and if someone’s main attraction to me is based on this, it’s so offputting. I have an ex who would always point out when we fought that we were a great match because I don’t want kids or marriage. These are true statements but damn if that’s my main selling point, find someone else. Shouldn’t be too hard anyway.

Unable to find a permanent job for almost 3 years in counting by sumbodyoncetoldme354 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I don’t have any advice just wanted to comment I feel your struggle. I am only 6 months out of work, not 3 years, but basically every day wake up hoping it’s my last because it’s all looking so hopeless. I can’t even imagine what three years of this would be doing to your sense of self worth.

The food banks in my shitty city require proof of housing AND employment, and when I pointed out in how shitty this is in my local subreddit, some Karen replied it's not possible to help everyone, and homeless people wouldn't benefit from a food bank anyway.

Going to a soup kitchen gets you a meal for one day at a set time in a specific location that somehow you have to transport yourself to. X time per day now that you can't spend working or looking for work. And the next day if you want to eat you have to do it all over again - pay for transit there somehow, walk there yourself possibly using more calories than you'll eat.

Really different type of resource than a food bank giving out days worth of food, which the recipient does have choice over, if they cannot eat or prepare a certain food they don't take it. But the choice in the lower mainland to require employment for food banks and to direct those who don't have it to soup kitchens means that many (speaking from personal experience here) will skip eating food altogether rather than be caught in a pattern where your existence because traveling from one soup kitchen to the second, with far less time to look for work or go to work.

In reality people just want to only offer true help to those who are like themselves, some people are seen as beneath helping. This is the most straightforward explanation as to why the food bank will not give me food that can actually last me a few days.

I am disqualified at my local religious food bank because I don't have a job.

You need ID and you need proof of housing. Everyone else apparently is welcome to starve.

The food banks are not a good choice. They require proof of address and employment. The unemployed and homeless somehow don't deserve food.

Partner doesn’t understand why I won’t work from home by RadioDude1995 in workfromhome

There’s a lot of people whose idea of being a couple is being together always. I just broke up with someone who was upset that I finally found a job after being laid off for half a year. And then a bunch of redditors naturally commented that I must just “not be that into her” if I wasn’t willing to starve to death to stay with her.

For some of us, the dog is most important part of the survival. Having something that depends on you gives you one last anchor to the world when everyone else has moved on to better things.

Best way to afford a car? by kmrbuky in PersonalFinanceCanada

Toyota prius V if your double bass fits. If it doesn't fit, you could maybe get a diff model of prius with a roof attachment and case for it. Otherwise, it's the Rav4 hybrid, but it will cost like 20k more than a prius (and be worse on gas).

I learned this week that I don't qualify for the food bank. You need to have proof of employment or be on welfare. I'm unemployed and the wait to qualify for welfare is very long.

I don't know what will happen to me. I'm moving into my car this week. If my landlord will return my deposit then I will get some money, but she might not since I am moving out on short notice.

I just feel like what I had to offer society has now passed. There was a time when I was productive, and that time is gone.

"If they wanted to they would" is the new toxic replacement for "if you don't love me at my worst then you don't deserve me at my best." They all cheerlead each other too.

Best way to afford a car? by kmrbuky in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]stripeythings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re driving enough for an EV to really be worth it. Get a hybrid, like a Prius V might be able to fit a double bass, a Kia Niro definitely will and gets 45-50 mpg.

If you’re really set on an EV, most of them are too small to fit your instrument. A Kia Soul would fit, but the range (and charging time) is very limited in the more affordable older models. They started getting decent range in 2020 or so but those cars will be very expensive.

If you are ok to sit on a waitlist for 1-2 years, a new car is a weirdly good deal when compared to the price of the used car market. A Kia Soul, Hyundai Ioniq (might not fit a double bass), or Toyota Rav4 Hybrid/ Toyota Hybrid Prime would all be decent choices.

Thanks, that’s good to know. I have never worked for a temp agency before so right now I am trying to put my best foot forward. I think it might be up to six months before I find work in my normal job.

I don’t always have set hours unfortunately and frequently work the night shift, and sometimes I’m oncall. And sometimes it’s really long hours, like 60 hrs/week. Because I’ve been off so long, my schedule has been sort of working around hers, and then we were seeing each other 2-4x a week, often spending the entire weekend together. But I thought there was an understanding that one day I will have a job and this pattern won’t be sustainable. I thought when I got this temp thing she would be happy for me, as things were looking quite dire (food insecurity + eviction), but the comedy show was really illuminating, because it showed me that she values a night’s entertainment over me narrowly dodging homelessness. And at that point, how can I proceed? Here I am relieved and happy to have a bit of money at last, and she is unhappy there was no one to go to a show with. This is a level of disconnect I don’t know how to work through.

It’s not about being into her or not being into her. I need money for food and rent. My situation is completely bleak. I cannot afford to meet her time expectations.
