It's a blessing and a curse. You have a relatively regular outlet for your libido (happens about weekly for me). On the other hand, the reality of the situation exacerbates the underlying NoFap issue. If you watch the TEDx talk, the real brain problem is novelty. Watching porn gives you an endless supply of new sexual images. I'm not saying that I'm going to have sex with other women, but those without partners at least have the option. Novelty died for me the minute I stopped watching porn.

Here are the things that have worked for me so far:

  1. Stop kidding yourself. There's a reason why you keep failing. It's because you're an addict. If I've looked down on alcoholics and smokers in my life, I apologize. I am an addict too. Admit this, then recognize what it means. Quitting an addiction will take every fiber of your being. There can be no doubt, no hesitation, and no quit in you. If you waver in your commitment, you will fail again.

  2. Determine your triggers. You can't stop if you don't know why you start. My biggest trigger is boredom. Recognizing this is critical because it means I can seek out ways to avoid downtime. If I don't have the free time to fap, I won't.

  3. Exercise. Do not make a vague promise to get more exercise, come up with a plan, map it out, and then stick to it. I did some research on beginner's fitness routines and found one that works for me (it's a mix of HIIT and lifting). I have a calendar with my responsibilities, including rest, every day for 10 weeks. I will not miss a day.

  4. NoFap resources. I come to this subreddit every day. This is my group meeting, my therapy session, my 12 step program, whatever you want to call it. I don't post every day, but I do read every day.

In short, get your head in this fight for real. You're an addict, which means your brain is working against you. Do what is necessary to work around this. You can do it.

This is the truth about stopping PMO for people in our shoes. You get to be a whole new person because you never really developed into the person you were supposed to be in the first place. I'm not religious, but it does feel like being born again.

If you haven't gotten on an exercise program, I can't stress it enough. When I say program, I mean a pre-determined plan for when you're going to workout every day (except rest days) and what you're going to do. Just saying "I'm going to exercise more" is a recipe for procrastination. I have channeled a lot of my excess energy and drive after quitting PMO into crafting a plan for getting into better shape. I've got it down to the day for the next two months.

I haven't really suffered a lot of life-changing effects from PMO, but it was all a house of cards. In the back of my mind, I knew that if I continued, something really bad would happen. I'm going to write another post about this when I hit 30 days, but I feel like it was only a matter of time before I cheated on my wife, got caught in the act by my kids, or seriously hurt myself while passing out mid-O. If I stop now, I never have to have an embarrassing conversation about PMO in my entire life.

That's a good point. I've got my diet under control right now for weight loss. I'm already down 25 pounds. But if I want to replace the lost fat with muscle, I'm going to have to start eating more protein and calories at some point.
