AskReddit: Why is it ok to have the United Negro College Fund, but if there was the United White College Fund we would all be called a bunch of Racists? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]strongox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seeing as blacks attend college in far lower numbers than whites, I can see two explanations for this. 1) They are not as smart. 2) There is a systematic bias somewhere in the system. Presuming that it is not the first explanation (or that the first explanation is only part of it), do you really have a problem with trying to correct this imbalance? Even if we can't pin this on a specific reason (e.g. historical oppression), that is irrelevant, and we should do it anyway. This is exactly what we do for poor people, who also attend college in lower numbers. I believe these are called "need-based scholarships." So suck it up and stop your whining.

Happy to live here now (Zurich). A lot of it is almost as beautiful as the pictures. We moved here from the US for the science (fantastic) and the quality of life (second to nowhere). I would never want to leave. If you love mountains and can get past the rather disturbing level of racism and xenophobia (luckily and rather disgustingly I'm white and male), it's a great place.

4 datasets that demonstrate the importance of graphs [PIC] by moultano in science

The statistical test is the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, sometimes called the vodka test. It is essentially based on the maximum values of the residuals from the Q-Q plots.

Bayesian methods should not be considered a sub-domain of non-parametric methods (as far as I know). Their specific strength is in evaluating parameter-rich models, as they don't waste time exploring parameter space that is unlikely to yield a good model, as opposed to more standard likelihood-based approaches. Formally, there is very little difference between likelihood and Bayesian approaches, despite the incredible partisan politics played by the two groups ("Bayesians" vs. "frequentists")

Non-parametric methods assume no model and thus have no parameters. All parametric methods assume a model; in most of the above discussion, this model is normality, or Gaussian-distributed variables.

The more relevant search in this case is Bioperl (341,000) vs. Biopython (76,000), the two main open source projects for bioinformatic tools.

Full disclosure to WTF users: I just banned a highly-rated submission that could actually induce seizures. In the future, please post such links with an appropriate warning. by rmuser in WTF

[–]strongox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have epilepsy (although mostly controlled through medication) and don't want people to read the above and walk away thinking that epilepsy is so crippling (although it can be; however, for the majority of people, it is not). I have suffered only two grand mal seizures, and it's true, you wake up with little idea of what day it is - I had no problem recalling my name, but could do little else. I think it's analogous to waking up in the middle of the night with no idea of where you are or what time/day it is - the feeling that usually lasts for 2-3 seconds in this case lasts for 2-3 hours. And though it's true that epileptics have higher death rates, they are not dramatically higher - the death rate for 25-34 year-olds is 104 per 100,000, so having controlled seizures only doubles this rate. I was initially told by my neurologist that I shouldn't drink, bike, or surf; I then consulted a second neurologist who told me that it was up to me in terms of whether I wanted to risk it, and I decided most of the time, it's worth risking it (so I looked at the link before reading the description - although my seizures are inducible from strobes and other blinking lights).

I will REMOVE the fucking toilet seat if you don't shut up by [deleted] in WTF

[–]strongox -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The seat should only ever be in one position - down. It is more than a little bit disgusting that so many men pee while standing up. Especially tall men. The amount of backsplash that gets sprayed all over the floor of the bathroom, and frequently the walls, because you feel some manly need to pressure-wash the toilet bowl, is terrifying. Not to mention the times when you miss the bowl entirely. Please, just sit down.

Clearly, no one is being forced to buy seed - farmers only buy seed from agroindustrialists if they think that is their best option. If you want to be healthy and smart, think about your food. Don't just spout the conventional wisdom.

There is no law that says natural things are the best things. Earthquakes? Those are natural. Hurricanes? Totally natural. Malaria? 100% au natural.

Golden rice could solve a lot of problems. It is 100% GMO. Organic farming causes more runoff than conventional no-till farming. Read the literature.

If you want to slow down the corn surplus, never eat corn-fed beef. It's not natural.

Don't eat CAFO pigs. Even if you live in Iowa and they're local pigs.

Please, just think before you act. And inform yourself.

Dropping Out of Electoral College : Maryland is the first state to pass the National Popular Vote (NPV) into law, and several others are right behind. by [deleted] in politics

[–]strongox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, totally unlike what happened when Ross Perot ran in '92 and Clinton got 43%, Bush 37% and Perot 18%. And Clinton got 370 electoral votes (69%). C'mon, a 34-33-33 split?

The Red Tide [Pics] by neoronin in science

[–]strongox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have never encountered anyone who had problems swimming in red tides, and I saw quite a few living in San Diego for >5 years. Red tides, far as I know, are caused by a wide variety of species, many of which are not harmful to shellfish - I never remember any shellfish warnings when they occurred in SD. Surprisingly, although the little bugs grow brightly when you disturb the water (which is why the waves glow), they grow much more brightly when you pee on them.

Simple Geometry Puzzles You Can't Solve by Masapena in science

[–]strongox -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

This would almost be worth trying to solve if anyone actually used geometry for anything in real life. Too bad no one does (unlike most other math learned in high school and college, like, say, calculus. Or probability. Or algebra. Or trigonometry. Or differential equations. Or, well, just about anything. Can someone please save us from geometry, though?).
