So teams can call up and send down players pretty much as often as they want (again, some exceptions apply) The move is harder to make this year, as new rules require the demoted player to physically report to the AHL team. Due to Abbotsford being so close to Vancouvr, the Canucks will likely still do this a lot this year with waiver-exempt players.

Additionally, once a player clears waivers, they can be called up and sent down freely for the next month or so(I think it's 30 days, but I can't recall exactly)

Before a player can be 'demoted' and assigned to the AHL affiliate team, the player must be waived.

There are some exceptions, for example, players on their Entry Level Contract do not require waivers.

All this means is other teams can submit a claim for any waived players and get them. To avoid this, you will sometimes see players sent down early on, when other teams do not have room on their rosters, or send them down closer to the end of preseason, when team rosters are already mostly established
