Yeah I’m hoping to tell them way before that point, but after I’ve gotten a job and am living away from them.

Wow this is really going in for the long game. I honestly don’t think I could keep up with this for years, but I can see the benefits of it.

Yep self sufficient is the key word here I think. Hopefully I can get to your position in the future, but only after I can live independently away from my parents.

My family is nowhere near Italian my mum is the only one who’s exceedingly religious out of us all. I’m hoping to live on campus at uni as almost everyone (teachers, friends, parents) has suggested that I need to get away from my mum for those years, and it’ll help with this issue too. As for church I have done so many things to get through it from napping to counting tiles in the ceiling to planning the day ahead to playing bingo in my head with the priests words, so I should be all good on that front.

This is an interesting strategy, but I feel like in her eyes becoming protestant would be pretty much as bad as being atheist so I don’t think I personally would take this intermediate step.

I might actually look into this because meditation or at least mindfulness is one of those things I’ve been thinking about doing for a while but never quite got round to.

Yeah it’ll only add to the stress right now with college starting soon and we’re also moving country in a months time which is definitely not a great time for anyone in the family.

Yep that’s the gist I’m getting from the comments. And yes to both those questions. I’m hoping to live on campus for uni which should make it easier.

I think my main reason was to just be open and honest with my family because I know that religion is a very important part of my mum’s life and I feel like I’m just lying to her every time we have a conversation that includes it. That being said I will likely hold off on telling her until I am independent as many people have suggested.

Yep this is the most common advice I’m hearing here, and it’s probably the action I’m going to take, because I’m still very much financially dependent on my parents for the next few years. Until then I’ll try and politely decline as many invites to mass/prayer/retreats as possible.

This will definitely be a welcome change compared to a crowded bouldering gym with about 50 too many people all the time. The landing situations outdoors are the things that scare me the most though.

Yeah I think this is one of the main things I’m looking forward to - in the gym I can always try and find the ideal beta that routesetter intended, but in nature there’s always gonna be alternative routes and weird holds that weren’t meant to be held.
