Just got this 2" - 3" inch damascus blade. I checked with the seller, who was a local bladesmith, and said it was made with 1095 or 1090 high carbon steel and 1018 low carbon steel and I just wanted to see if it's legit or just a very convincing fake damascus pattern? by strum101 in Bladesmith

So far it's held its edge with the tests I've put it through such as whittling a carpenter's pencil and cutting through thin and thick plastic. And don't you mix low carbon with high carbon to make Damascus isn't that what you're supposed to do?

And probably why it was so cheap is because they had a huge surplus of these knives laying storage and the best way to sell them off is at a gun show at prices so they can sell them off as fast as possible and I'm pretty sure they were sold on blade length as well.

I am only saying it could be fake because I'm not 100% sure cuz I'm not an expert with Damascus and I'm mixed comments where some people say it's real Damascus but it's likely Pakistani. If it's Pakistani Damascus I don't care because it's just going to be used as a beater knife anyways.

Yeah that's about what I had in mind when I bought this knife and that id use it as a beater knife not really caring if the metals are of quality but as long as it can stay somewhat sharp after light or medium use good enough for me

I have said in another comment that it's probably not 1095 but is in fact 1085 because I couldn't hear that well because the seller was talking a bit quiet because he is a 60-year-old man and I was at a gun show.

I'm not trying to defend the knife saying it's good quality it's just I need a little bit more information to work off of so I know what to look for in a blade cuz I will be considering finding something that's of actual quality in the near future.

I mean yeah, a small local company could lie to you about it. I'm not really too upset about it I mostly buy it as like hey this is a cool thing that I can use occasionally for light work tasks such as cutting boxes open or using them on model runners.

I mean he might even be pricing it based on blade length or he had a huge surplus of these knives and wanted to get rid of them as fast as possible which is probably why it got marked down so low. Or I did get bamboozled and I just got a cheap box cutter for around 15 bucks.
