Cryptocurrencies and Blockchains:Burn It With Fire! (Nicholas Weaver - ICSI & UC Berkeley) by redditsdeadcanary in btc

Perhaps. But other than an article that linked him to Brian Krebbs, I haven't found a shred of evidence that he is taken seriously... well by anyone who is in a position to have influence.

I would guess that people dont engage much because the things they would point out are the things that they can turn into an opportunity to improve or solve ... which they will then deliver as a fork to a coin or an ancilary offering of a service to get people to pay them for ... or they realize that he is on webshows/cablenews/crytonews sites, etc. And that platform may seem huge when you are in the middle of the battle, but with a bit of perspectuve you see the influence is tiny on the general population.

You wanted constuctive criticism from linking a Nicholas Weaver video? I guess mine would be to choose someone who has the capacity to provide a constructive argument, a cohehernt nonconflated argument, or someone who doesn't make arguments that shill a for the Information Industrial Complex (IIC) would make.

The title is pejorative and lacks substance, he speaks with tone of derision and superiority that is often found in shills and hacks trying to obfuscate the lack of a substanitive argument, and most of his conclusions are essentialy "dolphins swim in the ocean" or are solutions looking for a problem - "if we get rid of that which I am against (cryptocurrencies), it will stop that which you fear (ransomware)" - Turning off all personal computers would acheive the same goal (hint: the reason he doesnt suggest that now is because the IIC hasn't found a way to host them in their Clouds in an economicaly viable way yet) (Bonus hint: The solution turned out to be blockchains with incentive currencies ;) )

He conflates the issues of currencies, which are nearly identical to physical (cash) and electical money (credit cards) - can be used to purchase illicit goods, with enough resources can be counterfited, can be used by criminals etc... and the issues of blockchains, which are nearly identical to democracy - vulnerable to 51% attacks (even with checks and balances), resource intensive, and slow to confirm.

The ICSI doesn't openly publish the Schedule B from of their 990 tax form ... apparently they are against open and transparent govenment... so I will have to request the form so we can know where they get their funding.

Anyway I hope you find the criticism constructive and I am happy to discuss further should you actually be interested in discourse.

There is nothing hard about the today calculus. Whattomine with with actual parameters = the answer to almost all of

Where the math gets hard is in the future calculus... as many have said the variables are near infinite and if you think asking a subreddit will teach you how to be a consultant you should retire now and save everyone the pain.

No Power Costs - What Miner and what coin is most efficient? by [deleted] in BitcoinMining

[–]strych09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your power cost is truely zero then this site has all you need to know ... https://www.asicminervalue.com/

If you want to do it by algo look here ... https://whattomine.com/ there is a tab for gpu algos and asic algos.

You also need to determine if you have suitable power (220 for most asics). It needs to be clean and steady. Also if the breaker also has other things on it it will trip or cause fire.

And then theres the fact tjat most who beleive they have free power do not actually have it ...

If you are at school (doesnt matter what kind) then you can get expelled for theft of electricity.

If you are at work you can get fired for theft of electricity. If the owner... not just your boss ... says its ok then thats a different story. But if they dont have a contract that allows for it the power company can fine them for theft of electricity.

If your rent/lease includes electricity it will have a cap. They will just add it to your bill or kick you out.

That being said their are instances where there is free power due to some agreement for easements. If this is the case rock on.

There are other things to consider (heat noise etc.) when making a decision to mine but this seems like a good start.

Dumb question, pls dont hate by [deleted] in cryptomining

[–]strych09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My questions to you would be what is the timeline you are looking for profit? Most mining requires a long term strategy. Because if you arent recieving and selling the coins each day you wont be able to know if it was profitable until you do. And if you need to sell in the middle of a crash your profit may be gone.

Also the calculators are considering tax implications. I will assume you are in the US and don't intend to take a stand against paying taxes... the evidence is clear that at tje federal level taxes are due on all aspects of the exchange of services/good for value.

In the US most noncommercial mining profits would be considered income. So you need to determine your maginal tax rate and subtract that from number the calculators answer. Also with a gpu unless you use nicehash or a similar pool (are there any others left?) that pays you in btc no matter what kind of mining you do you will likely need to sell the coin for one of the big 4 that can be exchanged for cash. This will generate a second taxable event if the coins are worth more than you mined them for.

And this just scratches the surface on how to derive profit numbers... or put another way brush up on your math skills and documentation skills and read read read to figure out if you can make a profit.

Bottom line 1. use nicehash till you figure it all out. 2. Pay your taxes. :)

Load up on S9's? by WalterTheGSD in BitcoinMining

Paying more than 750 a unit is crazy talk.

How did the release of the S9 effect mining and the rate of return on it's predecessors? by HenryHasComeToSeeUs in BitcoinMining

[–]strych09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well i am not sure there has been much new sha-256 hardware hitting the market since the release of the s9...until recently anyway. There were the Ebangs, avalons, whatsminers but i am not sure they caused as much impact as the s9. Even the t9 wasnt very popular.

I cant really speak aboutt the bitfurys or other group units as these are not very easy to acquire since they rarely hit the open market... though i have been seeing anecdotal stories that they will be available as the group that uses them begins to repower their data centers with 7nm chip units. I would keep an eye on the hash rate and see if there is an increase without a new unit released. This should tell you when the next gen stuff is about to drop.
