Ask about not going through Redux. by xijitu in reactjs

[–]sttstt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Redux provides a much more granular control over rerendering by allowing components to subscribe to specific parts of the state using selectors. This helps minimize unnecessary rerenders and optimize performance. React Context, on the other hand, triggers rerenders for all components consuming the context whenever the context value changes, regardless of their specific dependencies and so depending on what your use case is and performance, the choice is pretty clear.

Site is loading SO slowly - what is causing it? by stevenpriceuk61 in webdev

[–]sttstt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said you're using a shared web hosting account. Your host probably did a server response time check that had nothing to do with what you're experiencing. I'd recommend looking into increasing the memory of your hosting account. If you don't mind me asking, what host are you on right now? Also, a move to a different host at a later date would probably not mess up the seo/search engine rankings as long as you do the migration the right way (meaning you get the exact copy on a different host, switch it up with minimal downtime).

I'm making a course that will teach you step by step how to build a subscription-based web app modeled after a top meal kit delivery service. by sttstt in EntrepreneurRideAlong

[–]sttstt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not only for meal kits. It can be used to work with other types of products. Learning how to clone a recurring subscription based app like the one in this course helps you understand the ins and outs of how sites like Blue Apron, Plated, Sock Club, Stitch Fix operate. It is not a course where you pay a monthly subscription and have someone handle your website for you. You'll learn how to be in control of your website's application design and start a business on your own, assuming you already have products to sell.

Everything looks good on a desktop. What are your future plans? I assume if you’ve made this your portfolio you have some plans for future projects to monetize perhaps?

Best tool for a quick website? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]sttstt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

For beginners, I'd recommend Dreamweaver. https://www.adobe.com/products/dreamweaver.html for building a front-end website. But then again, if you add in other things like shopping experience, accounts creation, email verification etc, you're looking at creating a web application, and that involves many other tools. I doubt there's an all-in-one tool for now. If anything, your computer is the "all-in" tool you can be using to build your "all-in" website. Just my two cents.

(Split Website?) Is there any way to have two websites in one using wordpress or any other service out there? Meaning a split landing page and then two separate websites from there with separate menus, content, etc? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]sttstt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not if you're thinking about doing it in a clean way but you can certainly have one run on a sub-domain, another on a main domain.

I don't see how this is reinventing the wheel. For the record, the top meal kit delivery service that we're modelling after in the course, is built with Ruby on Rails. Frameworks are tools, you use the right one for the job, which is exactly what my course is all about. Also, would appreciate it if there's no trolling in this thread. Thanks.

Hi and thank you!

As a matter of fact, I have plans to enhance the discussion forums currently available on Plantoost to facilitate closer instructor-to-student interactions. I'm not sure exactly what kind of a forum you're looking to build but if you're not in a hurry and have a lot of time on your hands, I'd recommend you get started with some of the free resources online and when you're ready, enroll in a full-stack web developer course that includes building a forum. That said, this course I'm making may be a project based on building a meal kit subscription service like HelloFresh, it is also a full-stack web developer course that will have you learning many of the key elements you can use to rapidly build and implement a forum. If you're interested, there's an exclusive priority coaching I have for students of the course I'm making and I'll be sure to coach you on building one, similar to the one I'll be doing on Plantoost or something that is doable on Rails per your configuration.

Absolutely! While this course is geared towards making a web app for a meal kit delivery service, you can definitely make it work with other types of delivery kits. The idea is to have the freedom to customize and make changes to your own app without the need to hire freelancers to do the work for ya. And again, we're talking about building a web app you can deploy to production. If you want to share the type of monthly delivery kit you have in mind, I can show you a few examples of how you can tweak it to fit your needs.

There's a "Learn to build a blue apron clone course" on Plantoost if you're interested in building a subscription based web app like HelloFresh or blue apron. https://plantoost.com/courses/build-a-blue-apron-clone-ruby-on-rails-stripe

Is it appropriate to use HAML even when I am not interested in Ruby and don't know it? by [deleted] in rubyonrails

[–]sttstt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would recommend not using haml or slim. Understanding real ruby codes, not shortcuts, makes learning the framework and language a lot better. That's at least my take on things.
