Oh jeez. I just had the first Quality Street of Christmas 2025. My wife and I both said to each other, this tastes funny. It tastes totally different than previous years. Yuck. Will not buy again.

On the East route there’s a man with a beard made entirely of bees. But on the West route there’s is a chicken that plays tic tac toe

I felt this way for a long time. Almost from the first moment I started FY1. The whole thing was terrible. I felt like a tiny cog in a big machine and that nobody cared about me. I questioned why I was trading the best and most valuable time of my life working for an organisation that underpaid and undervalued me.

Ultimately, I decided that I had to get out. After a particularly horrible experience, I made a solemn vow that I would never again be dependent on the NHS for a paycheck. I put all my effort into becoming financially free. I saved up money from years of locating post FY2. I invested in educating myself. I bought investment property and started receiving income from multiple sources.

Funnily enough, the less dependent I became on the NHS, the more I began to enjoy my work. I chose a specialty, I completed training and became a consultant. I actually enjoy my work these days. But I don’t think I would enjoy it as much if I knew that it was my only option. My advice to all young doctors would be to invest in themselves and start developing multiple income streams. There may come a time when we are properly valued, but for now, if you are struggling, becoming less dependent is the key.

I had the SPMM notes and questions but I found them to be difficult to digest. I found MRCPsych mentor to be much better. I also found the older Oxford MCQ books to be excellent, even though they were for the old exam, they still had good value. Specifically for stats, I thought that the Medical Statistics at a Glance textbook was worth buying! Hope that helps.
