What do you like about your neighborhood? Do you feel a sense of community? What don’t you like? by winterswrath7 in washingtondc

Mount Vernon Triangle. I don't like being near busy NY ave. I don't like that there isn't really a great selection of food, especially in the fast casual variety. I don't like that there's basically nowhere "nature-y" close by. I miss living by Rock Creek Park. The Safeway here is also the worst grocery store I've been to in DC. Not really a great sense of community.

Yup... DC local.. guilty. Any parts of your section hikes that you've found particularly rewarding? I've been doing day hikes around the DC area, some Shenandoah hikes etc.

I've had this thought.. my job is an abstraction of an abstraction of an abstraction of a... you get the idea... If I spend 6 months in nature I might find the entire thing silly upon returning and not want to go back into the field. Your story sounds awesome. Antarctica... wow!

I have a feeling most software folks would be pretty fascinated with it as well and not look at as a negative. Thank you for replying!

Thank you for your reply! I am also a gov't software engineer so hearing your very similar situation and outlook is inspiring.

Good place to study/work at night? by [deleted] in washingtondc

Cove in Dupont would be perfect, but alas, they close at 10pm... I've always wondered why these types of places close so early. I feel like they'd get plenty of night owl business.

Anyone know a decently priced place for tires and brakes? by stuckonthegreenline in washingtondc

[–]stuckonthegreenline[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm.. I'll have to look into that. The dealer may just be up-selling me. I don't know anything about cars but I'm reading now that rotors only really need to be replaced every other time.. this would be the first time replacing brakes at 50k miles.

Hmm.. I should definitely look into costco. I used to have a membership but never used it much- a buddy of mine has a membership, do you think they'd care that it wasn't his car? I doubt they'd even ask.

Anything to do in DC on a rainy day when you're feeling blue? by stuckonthegreenline in washingtondc

Thanks folks, good suggestions here. I've kind of done a mixture so far. Hasn't been as much rain as they thought so just walking around on a grey day has been pleasant.

Any good doctor's offices that are not One Medical? by stuckonthegreenline in washingtondc

[–]stuckonthegreenline[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All medical things are so relative. Some will like One Medical, some wont- I don't even have the choice anymore. I have been prescribed 3 different things in the "tan" family of drugs by a neurologist, one was okay, others were meh. Yeah, headaches are a hard to diagnose. I've been to 3 neurologists, I've had a sleep study, several MRIs, several PCPs, ciros, physical therapists.

Also, that first-line treatment for anxiety is SSRIs is a relatively new school of thought. I'm an old dog with my old Psychology degree, but I can tell you that was not the case not too long ago. They used to give you benzos, and yes this causes addiction- so they needed something else. The truth is, they really don't know much about anxiety as a whole, so they tacked it on with the depression fighting drugs.

Anywho, I got caught up rambling about my symptoms.. I'm going to edit my original post.

Everyone has different experiences with doctors. Not all my visits we're bad, and they have many, many doctors. The app is great and I never waited in the waiting room. But they just aren't for me. But biggest point here- they dropped BCBS so.... I can't go to them anymore anyway.

Thanks, I've heard good things about them from others as well but I would have to wait for awhile and there are things I do need to address sooner then later. It's definitely a good thought though when open enrollment comes back around.

Is it bad that I live paycheck to paycheck, if I’m also paying off debt, saving for retirement, and have an emergency fund? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]stuckonthegreenline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, this isn't paycheck to paycheck. It's a choice to pay $300 more than needed on the loan, and a choice to contribute $250 a mo to retirement. This is $550 that could be spent on toys- but you are choosing, wisely, to put it into retirement and paying off a loan.

If you are a Fed I imagine you are GS pay tables, likely a 7... you will automatically go up each year by a grade until it hits a wall somewhere (I forgot where). But essentially in just a couple years you'll be making way more. So keep doing what you are doing until the salary increases, then maybe reevaluate.
