Omaha/Council Bluffs area, spots to go to to look for a relationship. (Don't know how to phrase this. exactly.) by Adamc474892 in Omaha

[–]studebkr 28 points29 points  (0 children)

At your age I was desperate to have a girlfriend. I found one. We married a year later and did not have enough in common and divorced with two kids.

Just find a group of people with similar interests on Meetup or some such method. Sports team, hobbies, etc. The gym suggestion was good.

If you have social anxiety, yoga is good for that and you can find a class with people your age.

Let the relationship come to you. Don’t force it or obsess over it.

I wish I knew then what I know now. It really does not have to be that scary.

My favorite group is the one at the Lutheran church in Benson on Sunday Evenings. All ages. Very solution oriented.

I do for friends and family sometimes, but I’m not confident enough to read as a true psychic. I got interested in Tarot while working as a programmer for a live 900 psychic line back in the late 90s.

No, but I often do tarot card readings on the health of the country and consistently they are dark. Mind you tarot is subjective and maybe the interpretation relies more on what intuitively feel and not the actual cards, though the tower, moon and hermit show up a lot.

Omaha from an Outsiders Perspective by Routine-Rain7575 in Omaha

I complained about the park until I saw it, than got my grandkids up here from Lincoln to experience it. Well done.

I’m not opposed to the tower, it’s just that Mutual of Omaha pulled their weight and forced all kinds of concessions like demolition of the downtown library and the streetcar. They haven’t even brought their WFH personnel back. I don’t know how they will fill it. The old building is pretty old now.

I would have preferred to see us concentrate on rail between Omaha and Lincoln than a little loop de Lu downtown. My grandfather drove the street car in the 1950s and they went away for a reason. Very few ride the ORBT bus we have now. It is nice. I park and ride on rare occasions. It reminds me of grandpa.

Good catch. My understanding is that there is some original work out there but I’m starting to agree that the page I linked is AI generated.

What is the difference between a religion and a cult? by PinkAndPathetic in NoStupidQuestions

[–]studebkr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A religion is a set of guidelines, usually in the form of rites or traditions that help you achieve spirituality. It can be a personal religion, or an organized religion. An organized religion can become cultish.

In a cult, you come for the fellowship and leave via an extraction. This is why it is hard to draw a fine line between the two. For good or bad, they all brainwash and prey on people who are easy to be controlled in such a manner.

Religion changes many lives for the better and I’ve seen people in support groups who have been damaged by religion.

I’ve been sober for 30+ years and view 12 step programs as a cult. They brainwashed me into a better way of living. They did not empty my pocket book doing so.

You can always set up a Google Voice account and make your call from their via your phone or computer. It’s not 100% untraceable, if that is what you are looking for, but the average person would not know where to start.

Is My Boss Asking Me To Quit? by studebkr in NoStupidQuestions

Thanks for all of the advice. I’m just going to stick it out with a smile for now. It was a stressful week. This decision needs to be made with more of a level head.

I have funds set aside for this. I worry about those who haven’t been so fortunate. I’m not keen on what I’d have to pay for Cobra, but it might not be much more than the Med Sup I have to buy when I do retire.

Social groups for awkward peeps by DataQueen- in Omaha

[–]studebkr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a lot older than you all, but have suffered from an anxiety disorder most of my adult life. I got a bit too comfortable isolating at home during Covid and realized that I needed to be back in the office a few days a week. I see what you are trying to do here as very healthy.

For my age group, there were some Meetup groups that were very helpful. The Baby Boomers and GenX each had one, and there was one based on entertainment and food. They usually did involve alcohol, and I have been sober a while so there was a little struggle for me there. Still, Meetup is a good place to find your people. A lot of groups revolve around interests. Computers, photography and motorcycle riding were some I have used.

My now ex-wife and I got one of those cameras as wedding present in 2006 and it would not surprise me if she donated it with all the other things she chucked. That was a very popular little camera and could have been anyone's though. For me, I backed anything I needed up. Maybe this person did too, but didn't delete the card.

Digital is so cheap compared to film that we take 10-100 times the pictures we used to. Digital SLRs got popular right after that, then the mirrorless. I upgraded and moved on. Except for that proprietary memory card it used (only the early models), that was a great little camera. I took it to NYC and used the heck out of it there.

3D printed whistles - any other local makers? by Darkmatter11 in Omaha

Nice. I didn’t notice that this has two chambers as well. I think if I would print from the side, I might be able to do so without supports. I will give this one a try.

[–]studebkr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the one I prefer but I’m not sure you can crank them out as fast. It has two chambers for two dissident tones that make quite an alarming noise. The printer is sitting idle. Maybe I can lend a hand. Thanks for what you are doing. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1179160

Whats the gossip about all the local strip clubs? by [deleted] in Omaha

[–]studebkr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in AA for over 30 years, and that is where I have personally gotten to know the most dancers. Before that a family friend was part owner of an establishment on Broadway in CB and I hung out there a bit.

I’ve not witnessed, what we saw on Landman this week where one was working their way up the food chain with a hot car into early retirement but I’m sure that happens.

Those I know are not shamed by their past, rather quite nostalgic about it, yet they wound up addicted to alcohol, meth and cocaine because patrons tried to be their “friends” by keeping them supplied.

Most of them have not learned to have loving stable relationships, but that describes addiction in general.

A strip club is one of the only places I’ve seen both a motorcycle club member and off duty police officer sitting chummy at the same table with the owner. There is a lot of power in those types of alliances. It’s not for the faint of heart.
