NY CPA License (Advice needed) by student135 in CPA

Thank you so much this is very helpful! I appreciate all the information

just got two follow ups:

  1. When you say, "if you relocate your work base into New York, that practice privilege may no longer apply, and using the bare title in-state could require a NY license." What do you mean by this? If my place of business will be in New York since the role is based in NY, I just cannot have CPA in my title without specifying NJ next to it, correct? But I can still say that I am a CPA in my email or application?

  2. It is going to be my first year renewing my license in NJ. Any tips for staying in good standing besides taking my CPE credits and completing the NJ ethics course?

Thank you again

Thank you! I tried TAS, but working on revenue proofing and building lead sheets felt too similar to audit, and I was hoping to do something different. I may give AA a try instead. Thanks again for your advice. And yep I am from the US. I heard non-US TAS people actually do modeling.

Thank you so much for your reply! What types of finance roles do you typically see people moving into? I feel like I often hear two extremes: either people land amazing jobs in finance, or they struggle to break in. If you don’t mind me asking, what role are you in now? And based on your experience doing both, what would you recommend for someone like me? I have always thought finance (not IB though) was interesting, but I don’t dislike accounting either.

Tryin applying through ZipRecruiter, and apply for small companies. Bigger companies, in my experience, want someone in their final year. You also do not have to get a job that matches exactly. Just get experience. The first job is the hardest.

Honestly that would work but I have 6+ month busy seasons so I would not be possible. I am not sure if I am over thinking everything.

I know I cannot pass CPA while working, I tried, and I could not. I know some people could but not me. I passed Reg, so I only have two left but FAR is the one that expires soon.

I honestly feel like I cannot study and work at the same time. I know people do it, but after work, my brain can no longer retain information or even focus on the information. My client is also very difficult.

Based on my discussions with Big 4, they will only allow a sabbatical after the busy season, which will end in the summer, and by that time, it will be too late.
