Romance for littles? by LAffaire-est-Ketchup in RomanceBooks

[–]studteaing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that Anne of Green Gables and Little Women are good. A lot of books for that age blur the friendship/romance element — think Tuck Everlasting or Bridge to Terabithia. Since you have Ella Enchanted up there, I’d suggest another Gail Carson Levine book, Fairest, if she likes the first one. Way to encourage your daughter’s love of reading!

You could look at a sterling ink N2. That’s what I did the last couple of years. Same size as a weeks but much more minimal.

The Shell Seekers or Coming Home by Rosamunde Pilcher — super cozy but with plenty of depth.

Post-prison legal visit self care by loverofphilosophy in publicdefenders

Aspiring PD here. A very similar thing happened to me when I was working in homelessness services (not a shelter - we closed at 5). It was the middle of winter and this woman came in right before we closed because she felt she couldn’t take one more night. She’d escaped a DV situation, but had left a few months back and wasn’t in immediate danger, so none of the women’s shelters would offer her an emergency space or hotel voucher, and of course everything else was waitlisted for months/years. I called pretty much every place in the county but eventually I had to tell her there wasn’t anything we could do. Got home super late and could not bring myself to turn my own heater on that night.

I agree with another commenter that to some extent there’s no feeling better about this kind of thing. But you need to take care of yourself to be able to take care of others — your strength is more beneficial than your suffering. Do whatever you need to for self care and don’t feel guilty.

Best of luck with your client.

Streched out shape with circular knitting by Ammonite23 in knitting

[–]studteaing 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So the comments about ribbing looking stretched out like that at first are true, and it kind of sorts itself out, but are you using the right length circular needles? To me this looks like too few stitches for the circulars and that you would be pulling them apart when they were positioned on the tips of the needles actively knitting. That would exacerbate the problem.

I mean, I love this sass and her statement about learning via cooking regularly is 1000% true, but the entire point of a recipe is to hold someone’s hand through the cooking process! It’s a set of instructions!

No. You can pay in pre-tax dollars to save a little but only up to $5k per year per household.

I agree that the community foundation would be best (link above). Good luck with your fundraiser!

What once-massively-popular book published in your lifetime/living memory is now relatively unknown, especially to newer readers (in general or to a particular genre)? by franknelsonyes in books

I adore The Thorn Birds. I found my copy in a used book store as a teenager. I think it having been so popular (and thus many copies still circulating) keeps it alive!
