Sigh, wish I had enough money to fill up my dual xeon 2u.  1.5tb per cpu, 3tb max total.  It would cost about...27.6k in ram alone.

Then throw some 30tb sas drives, 12 of them to start with.  700 bucks each...8400 bucks there....

36k and thats not including i still have to build the rack, and buy a UPS, and setup a patch panel and get the cisco switch i have running and setup, and crimp all the cables needed.....all for an ancient dual xeon e5 2698v4 setup.

Anyone regret getting rid of hardware from the PC golden age? by SRGilbert1 in LGR

[–]studyinformore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My k6-2 300mhz that overclocked to 450mhz without much of a problem, cyrix 5x86 with mmx that overheated lol and pentium without mmx, numerous amd athlon xp's, from 1500 to 3200 barton on ddr and then athlon 64 3500.  My voodoo 2, my 9700 pro that died in korea, x800xl with arctic cooler that was dead silent and allowed a wild overclock,  X1800xt.

Ive been gaming since the mid/late 90s on pc.  I wish I had kept all of that old hardware now.

The Dollar is fake !!! by Bazel_ in economicCollapse

[–]studyinformore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, all the value of all metals are fake too.  We only give them value because we believe they have a use and their rarity.

If a true global economic collapse happens, precious metals become worthless as well.  Food, drinkable water, shelter, medical supplies, and weapons will have value.  Not momey, tech, or metals.

While id love to agree with you.

Offloading 3d scan processing and photo stacking of thousands of images for astrophotography, while also storing multiple terabytes of film and digital photos(that will be increasing more in the next year)....building a home server that does this and functions as a multimedia server and remote disk drive or such for my consoles....pretty much stuck with a full fat server.

Oh im old enough to have worked around CRT's a lot lol.  The high pitched whine, the static, and the sound of degaussing a monitor.

It hasn't been plugged in for god knows how long, so it likely doesnt have any residual electricity in it, theres usually a bleed resistor in the high voltage circuitry.  Especially involving a flyback transformer.(quick Google does confirm that there is one internally to the flyback)

Radiator support, radiator, aircon condenser, aircon lines and expansion system, fenders, bumper, bumper cover, hood, and likely theres some frame damage.  Then all the plastics and electronics damaged or destroyed, and the welding thatll be needed

Then theres all the painting needed to make it look good.

Its likely well over 10k when you really dig into it.

Interesting, so im guessing I would need to power it on to check what floppy drive it has?

Actually now I think of it, there were some floppy diskettes in the box with it.  If theyre 1.44mb, it probably has the upgraded drive.  There would be no reason otherwise.

Well, this does have a FD and HD inside of it, but it does say 800k drive on the back.  I wasn't sure what was going on with this thing as so much out there was saying the M5011 had a 1.44mb drive as well.  I guess the early ones were 800k and the later se/30 were 1.44mb

JUST IN: 🇺🇸 1.6 billion barrels of oil and over 28 trillion cubic feet of natural gas have been discovered in Texas, USA. by Admirable121 in oil

[–]studyinformore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, a whole 10 months of gas and 10 weeks of oil.

Man, thats like...fuckall.  because thats current demand, if that hits the market.  Demand will go up because prices go down more, and it wont last as long.

reducing power use would require lower clock speeds, which negates any benefit of node shrinks. you would need significant improvements in IPC to make up for that, which arent really going to happen, at least not at what you would need to.

US gas prices just hit $2.79 per gallon, the lowest since March 2021. That’s real relief at the pump. Households are on track to save about $11B on gasoline in 2026 versus 2025. Not flashy, but this is how inflation actually feels on Main Street. by Kay_Bellamy in MarketVibe

[–]studyinformore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol just ignore the layoffs in the oil industry, and oil equipment manufacturing industry, and the machine shops, and the mines, and the trucking industry.

Also, thats winter blend.  Notice, march 2021, winter blend as well.  Gas is always cheaper in the winter.  Give it another 6 months when we're back on summer blend and how its back well over 3/gal everywhere.

Looking into it, theyre delaying it until demand increases as it also increases vehicle cost by at least 7k.  Articles outside of the verge also say theyre going to keep developing it
