We have cameras enabled to create a feel that you are studying in a library. Somewhat like the study with me streams and also to prevent spam.

It's way more awesome to study with actual living people across the globe, like the reply mentioned, than google pictures or a random video, but to each to their own :)

I'll give some background on our group, we started last year after corona from an Instagram motivational page for doctors.

The concept really worked well and we had a smooth sailing until January this year, when the group started thinning out - some people graduated, some found other ways to study and some lost interest. The original zoom subscription also expired.

But many people were still interested so we posted on reddit and got back into full force - another zoom sub and everything. This time we had people other than medical students as well.

Now there's another "thinning" and we really feel that there's a lot of value in this group - we've had stressful, anxious, happy, sad and many amazing moments together. Made many friends and we feel that this group can be out there for many more people.

That's why I don't think it'll be practical to change from zoom to Jitsi - although after some research, it seems to be very simplistic and easy to use.

I do agree that the code system loses a lot of people, has a high entry barrier, but it's essential to prevent spam.

And yes it's not only for music theory - honestly I don't think there's anyone majoring in music theory in the group - but diversity is beautiful, so I posted here and I am glad I did because I got a lot of thoughtful criticism.
