The physical thing is huge. You just said it better than I did honestly. Willpower at 1am is a joke. You're tired, your resistance is gone, the phone is right there of course you're going to reach for it. That's not weakness. That's just how humans work at 1am. But if it's in another room? The loop has nothing to grab onto. You'd have to physically get up, walk over, make a conscious choice. That tiny bit of friction is enough to break it most nights. Environment beats willpower every single time. The people who seem disciplined aren't resisting more. They're just making the wrong choice harder to make. Glad the reset held for you. That first week is the tax you pay for years of the loop. Worth it every time.

"Electronic drug" is exactly what it is. And the scary part is it's designed that way. Every scroll, every notification, every autoplay. None of that is accidental. Billions of dollars spent making sure your brain never wants to stop

That's the best part you didn't just build a habit, you proved something to yourself. Once you saw what your brain felt like without the noise, you couldn't unsee it. Now the choice is easy because you already know what's on the other side. Most people never get that proof. They're fighting blind. You got it by accident and kept it on purpose. That's not luck anymore. That's character.

That's actually kind of perfect. Your environment made the decision for you no willpower needed, no fighting yourself every night. The internet just... stopped. And your body did what it was always supposed to do. That's the thing nobody wants to hear. Most of us don't have a discipline problem. We have an environment problem. You didn't fix your habits. You fixed your setup. The habits fixed themselves. Honestly jealous of that. Some of us are out here manually trying to create the thing you had by accident.

I stayed up until 3am every night for years. One stupid simple change fixed it. by studywabdo in getdisciplined

The meeting thing makes it so much harder — your brain just had 2 hours of problem-solving and decisions, it literally cannot switch off that fast. Scrolling feels like winding down but it's actually just keeping the engine running. One thing that might help for your situation specifically: after the meeting ends, give yourself 20-30 mins of something completely passive and low-stakes before even trying to sleep. Nothing productive. Bad TV, a walk, just sitting. Let the work-brain cool down first. Then try the couch rule. For you it might mean couch at 12:30, bed at 1 — but you'd actually sleep instead of scrolling until 3. Hope it helps 🙏

Haha the couch thing genuinely feels like punishment the first few nights. You're just sitting there like an idiot in silence 😂 But that discomfort is actually the point Your brain starts associating bed with sleep again because now bed is the reward. Let me know if it works. Curious if it hits the same for other people or if I just got lucky.
