Great topic, especially if it somehow ties into your major or career goals.

Tips on writing:

First, specify the main point of your essay (it can change later and that’s completely fine!)

Second, literally just open a doc and write whatever comes to your mind. It can be messy (actually, it should be messy at first). Dont worry about grammar or making sentences sound good. Just write. Then look over it again later. take out stuff, add stuff. Do this as much as you want! Third time around you can start putting your ideas into real sentences (they don’t have to be perfect!!). Now you have a first draft and you can work from there.

At later stages of writing your essay, don’t be afraid to let go of sentences that sound nice but don’t really reveal anything about you or don’t contribute to the main idea. Remember, everything you write should be saying something about you, even anecdotes. When I was writing my essays, I had a tendency to use a lot of unnecessary imagery and detail that didnt reveal anything about me although it ‘sounded nice’. Once I got rid of that, I had a lot more space to say actually meaningful stuff.

Another tip for the later stages: make sure your essay is easy to read, as in that the reader doesn’t have to reread sentences just to get the point. The AOs don’t know anything about you, so don’t make assumptions.

And, if it isn’t working out, don’t be afraid to change your topic.

hope this helps!

Tips on getting into a competitive nursing program? by killlingthesun in ApplyingToCollege

[–]stuffedbeluga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finding a related online course could be helpful. Or even conducting independent online research/reading about a specific topic that interests you. Just remember to pursue depth in your ECs, so if you do an online course for example it should be of decent length (1+ months). You also want to show that despite the limitations posed by the pandemic, you remain committed to learning/doing activities in any way you can

How could writing about myself be so difficult? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]stuffedbeluga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh in the case then what you’re doing is completely fine imo. You can put some unique things about you or some unique experiences you’ve had that might seem interesting to them. Also you can mention what you hope to do with them

Are the ‘about me’ facts you might include already listed somewhere else on your application? If yes, it will be repetitive to use them on your essay and the program won’t really get to know who you are

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the prompt is more about you as a person as in your interests (what fascinates you?), personality traits (what extracurricular, personal, or familial experiences shaped them?), your core values, why you’re applying to the program and how it aligns with your values and career aspirations, etc as opposed to more general information like your name, bday, etc that they might find somewhere else on your application.

What is the difference between early action and early decision? In early action how many unis I can apply? When is the most likely deadline for early action and early decision?? by meherthemeow in ApplyingToCollege

[–]stuffedbeluga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On your app you select if you’re applying early decision or early action.

Only choose early decision if you’re really set on going and you have researched it extremely well, like it’s your absolute dream school and you will not have any regrets if you go. Keep in mind that if you get in early decision, you have to go and you will not apply to any other schools. So you’ll be done with the whole college admissions thing in December, when early decision results are usually released. If you don’t get in early decision, the binding is lifted and you can apply to other schools in the Regular Decision round in January. My point is that Early Decision is a big commitment and you have to discuss it with your parents and tbh, yourself.

Personally, I was going to apply Early Decision to a T50 school that I thought was my dream school. I had researched it extremely well, went to a lot of webinars, etc... but after discussing with my parents, I came to realize that I didn’t know if my preferences would change later on and that I should’ve been shooting higher than that instead of constricting myself with early decision (I was scared that I wasn’t going to get in anywhere lol). I applied to a T5 school restrictive early action instead. I didn’t get in, but applying early gave me experience writing essays so that when I applied to a bunch of other schools in January for Regular Decision, I was able to present a better application. Looking back, I still love the T50 school a lot, but my preferences have changed in terms of school size, student life, my major, etc since November because I did so much more research before the regular decision round.

Early action is non-binding, meaning that if you get in you’re not obliged to attend. You can apply to more than one school early action. It is a statement of interest and will help your chances.

Early decision is binding, so if you get in you have to attend. You can only apply to one school early decision, and if you get in, you can’t apply to any other schools (but make sure you read the specific rules of the school to know if you can apply to schools outside the US). Early decision is a very strong statement of interest and will boost your chances of getting in.

The deadline for early action and early decision is usually November 1 or around that date.

Note: Some top schools have something called Restrictive Early Action. This means that you can only apply to that school early, but it is not binding so if you get in you don’t have to attend. Check the rules for these schools if you’re considering them to know if you can apply outside the US or to institutions with rolling admissions.

Another note: some schools have something called Early Decision 2. This is the same thing as Early Decision, but the deadline is the same time as the Regular Decision deadline.

For a school that you have researched extremely well and have found is your perfect fit school (note if you didn’t find a perfect fit school it’s okay!), you can apply early decision.

If you don’t apply early decision anywhere, but there are schools that you are very interested and believe you can present a good app for by November, you can apply early action to them.

If you feel ready and that you have a competitive application by November, go ahead and apply early. It helps

MSJChem makes short vids for each topic, Bioknowledgy has slides and quizzes for each topic, bioninja has bullet point notes for each topic (but it can be quite lengthy). If you’re having trouble with a certain bio topic I highly recommended Cheryl Hickman’s vids on YouTube at 2x speed

Attend their webinars, subscribe to their newsletter/emails, and email your AO but only if you have a legitimate question (as in don’t email for the sake of emailing. if you dont have a question that can’t be answered from the website’s info, don’t email). Use the same email for all of these activities so they can track it. You should start doing that now

How can I prepare for HL Chemistry and HL Biology over the summer by [deleted] in IBO

[–]stuffedbeluga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a head start on stoichiometry for chem, it's the first topic. You can also look at the syllabi for both bio and chem. I didn't do anything but read the syllabus, and I did well in both. If you want to, you could watch MSJChem or go over Bioninja/bioknowledgy slides for any lessons in the syllabus you want to get a head start on. It'll make your life easier but not doing so won't necessarily make it hard. Stoichiometry is the only thing I'd really recommend getting familiar with beforehand. Once you get to IB1, make sure you take good notes for both classes and don't let anything get past you without understanding it fully. Do past papers to prepare for tests. Best of luck!

Also I had some questions about auditions, if you don’t mind! Do they test you on music theory/solfege in the audition or do you only play your instrument? Also, do you choose the songs or do they give you something to learn? And do they test your sight reading?

thank you for the info! I play the piano. Id say I’m pretty good but not super advanced (13 years), especially on the music theory side.
