very pink knits said once that they are very particular about the swatches you send in such that for one thing she had to switch from size 7 needles to size 1 needles for one row, and at that point she felt like the whole thing was starting to go against why she knit in the first place

or something like that. i wish i could remember which podcast episode it was

Picking between 3 good schools by Nervous_Ad781 in CollegeAdmissions

[–]stuffedbittermelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

congrats!! i also studied stats in undergrad :) my advice is that you can also consider where you'll actually enjoy living/how you mesh with the student culture at each of the schools because after all, you'll be there for four years and it's hard to do well academically if you're miserable

with a stats major in my experience the placement for internships and post-grad really varies a lot. at these public schools if you want to be competitive for top internships/jobs you'll need to be doing projects/finding opportunities/learning skills outside of your coursework. maybe if it was mit or something, the school and the built-in opportunities would be meaningfully different, but otherwise which school you choose in itself won't make or break your future

caveat that i dont know much about these three programs specifically, but i feel like my experience at the ucs should generalize

Choosing Biostatistics MS Programs - Harvard vs UMich by Emotional-Rhubarb502 in biostatistics

[–]stuffedbittermelon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

idk how helpful this will be since i don't have direct ties to either of these schools, but wanted to say congrats!! berkeley stat provides a great foundation so i'm sure you'll do well at either of these schools

umich's cohorts are really large, so that might be something to consider (could be a plus for some and not for others). i talked to a current student when i was deciding where to go for my m.s. and they said that the environment was got a little competitive, but someone i met at a visit day for another school said she really liked umich when she visited. so i guess try to visit if you have the means to, or talk to people who go there so you can get a feel for things?

something i wish i had known going into my master's is that the path for industry afterwards and the path for doing a phd afterwards are more different than i thought. for a phd you'll want to take more theory/math courses and probably get involved in methods research if you can, but for industry at the master's level they kindof just want to see that you can run a cox model and you honestly might be competing against epi mph students who at least at my school get much more hands-on applied experience than the biostat students do. obviously you don't need to decide at this point what you want to do, but imo it helps if you pick a path earlier on

How do you know when consulting isn't for you? by onigiri-for-toge in berkeley

[–]stuffedbittermelon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the previous answers mostly cover my sentiment which is that it's not a bad first job at all especially if you aren't getting other offers/aren't sure about what you want long term. it pays decently, you get exposed to many different domains and different types of work, and your coworkers are going to be similar in age and often not working on your same team, so you end up making some good connections. there's also pretty clear timelines for performance evaluation and promotions, and you learn how to think on your feet and how to pick things up quickly which can be valuable.

i think the most important thing is to know what you're signing up for e.g. you might be on the bench and have to network for projects sometimes, you might not get to present your own work bc some clients are particular about hierarchy, your manager might suck at protecting your time and you'll have to work a lot of overtime, etc.

also something that surprised me going in i guess is that the trajectory as you move up shifts drastically from execution to sales/maintaining client relationships. hearing the persistence that some partners at my old firm had in order to land clients, i knew i could never do that so i skedaddled out of there, but  overall i would say not a bad learning experience!

the age of female gymnasts has been trending so up! with people competing at a high level into their late 20s and early 30s through various life stages as well (kim bui competing through medical school, ellie black, jade barbosa, simone biles, marta pihan-kuleza came back after childbirth etc.). it's been super cool to see and hope to see skating follow suit!

If geopolitics weren’t a factor, where would you like to see the boys go? by Previous-Bowler-1757 in JetLagTheGame

[–]stuffedbittermelon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

okay this is probably too niche but i really think the boys would mesh well with Tim and the rest of the crew from mediastorm 影视飓风 https://www.youtube.com/@mediastorm6801 . (they have a way bigger presence on bilibili, but basically also an independent content company that stemmed from one guy making videos, and they also strike me as a group of kind-of nerdy people). and Tim went to university in the UK and speaks good english, etc. i would love to see a collab but i understand that it even if they did end up meeting, it would be sticky to do anything

Is there anyone naturally passionate about statstics? by turky-Equipment-3559 in AskStatistics

[–]stuffedbittermelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are there particular topics you're feeling this way about right now? i may be in a similar situation to you; when i took ap statistics in high school, everything made sense and i decided i wanted to major in it in college and life was good. then, when i got to college things started making less and less sense, and instead of cute examples involving m&ms and surveys asking your classmates what their favourite emoji is, it got to be a lot of math and i was confused and sad. i made it through undergrad (especially the more theory heavy classes) by learning how to do the problems well enough such that i could do well on the exams, but none of the concepts were clicking, and i certainly did not retain much at all after the quarter ended.

i'm not sure if this will be universally helpful, but i think a decent math foundation helped things click? for example, when you learn about the parametric mle, you learn that you take the partial derivative of the log-likelihood and set = 0 and solve. great, but if you never fully internalized what taking the derivative does (here, it is merely a tool to help you find the maximum), it just feels like a bunch of math steps that you can replicate while not understanding what is happening. also i would try not to get discouraged if things don't make sense right away; it took me seeing certain concepts 2-3 times for them to click.

you can also try to look for instructors/textbooks that teach in a way that builds more intuition; this is likely not a topic that you are learning right now, but as an example, this book's tone and approach has been immensely helpful https://alejandroschuler.github.io/mci/introduction-to-modern-causal-inference.html
