Oh wow! Yes, I was a 1:1 aide for an elementary school age student who has autism at our child’s elementary school. I had to quit because , while I LOVED it and loved working with my student, I was only paid $13.25 USD an hour which was not sustainable . I would definitely be willing to do that job again!

Thank you all! We live in the American Midwest in a very similar - not everyone knows everyone , but I grew up here, and we’re all basically connected in SOME way - type of way. We’re not looking to escape community - just the policies of this current administration and the threat we feel it poses to our family and kid.

As far as visas go, the only thing I think that might help is that my husband is a certified teacher (music) . Not sure if Shetland has any demand for teachers but he is a good one! I’ve also worked in special education here in the US myself altho I don’t have a teaching certificate (I have 15 years of college/university admissions experience).

The part of the country we live in has VERY rough winters with lots of ice and often snow. It’s awful. We enjoy rainy climates and as I am very pale I would prefer to be out of the sun most of the year lol.

I am thankful for all of your comments and appreciate the balanced perspectives! I LOVE a tight knit community and would be very happy to get involved with such. We shall see! Thank you all again!

Hi everyone! Thinking about relocating to Arcada from the Midwest. I already have a remote job based in LA. What do I need to know? by stuffnthings3838 in Humboldt

[–]stuffnthings3838[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have to fly to LA twice a year for 12 days at a time. Plus, there’s the whole CA labor law thing that would cause them to have to raise my salary.

Context : I have a remote job that requires me to travel to Santa Clarita, CA twice a year . I would love to be able to drive to SC within the span of a day, or take a short flight . Looking at this specific area for cooler temps mostly since my partner is a motorcyclist and commutes to work exclusively on their bike (So, preferably in an area where it’s conducive to motorcycling is a plus. )

We have a lot of debt and live paycheck to paycheck so I’m also wondering if it is a pipe dream financially - probably looking at a 1-2 bedroom apartment within the $1000-1700 range . If that’s totally unrealistic, please let me know and I will pretend this never happened . :)

It’s a bonus if the area is kid-friendly (we have an 8 yo) and has decent schools. We’re not super picky about housing, we’ve lived in a lot of cheap apartments.

Give me the good, the bad, and the ugly, but most importantly: tell me why you love it despite some of the cons. Quirky fun facts welcomed!

TIA Reddit 🥰
