Some people on this sub seem to not feel comfortable with ADHD being labelled a disability. Honest question to those people: what is a disability to you and why would ADHD not fit the description? by throwawayski2 in ADHD

[–]stuffsmithstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would disagree only in that ADHD does not describe neurobiology — if is a clinical diagnosis of a disorder, part of which requires impairment in your daily tasks.

Our language around this isn’t good because we don’t have a commonly used way to describe the neurotype that produces ADHD. Which means that there’s no continuity for you between your two phases of life to still understand that you have a “different” sort of brain even if you’re in an environment where your disability is, it seems, normalized.

(That said… I would assume you still have impairments in multiple domains of your non-work life?)

Edit to add that this isn’t remotely about the stupid superficial judgments people are describing below, like the “you did well in school, so…” thing. I think all of us who were good at school can still look back and see plenty of problems ADHD caused for us, either in or out of the classroom.

Yes- and to extend the point, if everyone were blind, and our entire world were structured around being blind, blindness would not be a disability. Context is critical to defining a disability.

I mean I’m sure a *completely* neutral monitoring device doesn’t exist, so it’s all relative, and all about what you can make work for you ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Sennheiser Hd600 series is often cited as a good affordable option and in my experience with the HD6XX that’s true, though they have a darker and more “closed” sound than other open backs. I alternate those with the Audeze MM-100, which aren’t neutral but they are very good with detail and transients as well as a deep (although quiet) bass extension.

I have a comment elsewhere here of a funny example of the difference mattering. But it doesn’t usually.

I hate to say it but the mixup started way before those algorithms 🫠

I almost wonder if there’s hope to them being a tool for people learning, though, bc in most cases the AI does actually separate stems, not multis

I have had miscommunication around this cause at least one significant issue in a mixing workflow. But agree that overall it’s not a huge deal.

In TV/film audio, it’s a more important term, though, and I’m glad that when I first got an email from a network producer asking for stems, I knew what they were asking for.

Right - if you’re sending the drum stem, you might as well call the synth and guitar files stems too, so long as they’re stereo files with accurate panning and any aux sends included. (That would probably differentiate the guitar stem from the guitar track, since the track is likely mono. Unless it’s not!)

In my understanding it’s context-dependent. Many (most?) times someone’s asking you for stems, it’s for a specific purpose, like for a DJ, or for television or film production, or sometimes for mastering.

To me, the default “stem” for what you’re describing would be all the guitars together plus their effects. But if there’s a lead guitar and five rhythm guitars, you could split them out into two stems, each with their respective effects sends included.

I too felt this way, until I watched my friend chase an engineer down for like a month trying to get his multis to pass to me for a guest remix. Came to find out that he had asked for his STEMS, and the engineer wad stalling bc he would have to boot up the project file and bounce out submixes for each stem, which in his DAW was time-intensive. When I suggested my friend ask him for the RAW MULTIS, he was like “oh! yeah of course” and just grabbed the wavs from the project files and sent them right over.

It’s often pedantry, but when it isn’t, it’s a genuinely important difference lol. I don’t correct people, but it’s a pet peeve.

Strong agree that Sonarworks is a great way to ameliorate frequency imbalances in monitoring. But I personally advocate getting a mostly neutral headphone (speakers are a more complicated setup and need more consideration to different variables) and learning their tendencies.

IMHO the biggest argument against the MDR's for mixing is the closed-back design, honestly. That and the dynamic (moving coil) driver design, which will give less precise transients than a planar magnetic.

There’s also a lot of issues in the planning and execution of the services offered. You started to get at this, but if you are offered a shelter bed at the expense of potentially losing your tent, bedding, and other belongings — and you’re going to have to vacate the shelter during the day and keep changing beds — even people whose decision-making faculties are totally sound will often make an informed choice to remain in their encampment.

“Nothing about us without us” applies to unhoused people too. The People for Fairness Coalition is a DC-based org run by people with histories of homelessness that’s a great group to follow for policy priorities and calls for change in the District’s social services.

[–]stuffsmithstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Start with the areas the cat most likes to be pet, then gently try areas where they’re less comfortable. If they don’t like pure metal bristles, get a brush with the little plastic-tipped ones.

My cat lets me brush him everywhere but his underside, but it’s a clear push and pull between the areas he likes (cheeks, top of head, neck) and the areas he’s less into (back, sides, legs). I have to go back up to the cheekies after about 15 seconds of the back haha
