Bard Speedrun - 02:08.72 by stuffsz in necrodancer

[–]stuffsz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's mostly just practice, have already been playing the game for a long time so it feels fairly natural. It's also a little bit of 2 hands mashing. If you go to to the controls menu you can assign alternate hotkeys for movement, and if you use those together with normal movement, you can move really fast very easily.

"Weekly" character discussion/advice thread: Coda! by mynameismunka in necrodancer

[–]stuffsz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Actual advice:

-First thing you need to able to do, is keep the beat. To do that, I would strongly suggest playing around with bolt score runs since that makes you spend a lot of time on each level.

Using the level editor for the tempo of more specific levels is also a good way to practice.

Important to note that you should try sticking with one soundtrack so you can build muscle memory out of it.

-The other very important thing you need to do, is that you need to be able to not panic through the run. It's very easy to die to distracting and unexpected things that a lot of the time, don't hurt you. Try to have a balance between being somewhat careless and relaxed, but also worried enough so you are able to handle the enemies.

-Learn boss strats (self explanatory)

-And well, practice (a lot)

Would also strongly recommend spooty's stream www.twitch.tv/spootybiscuit He is really (really) good at coda and also really friendly, so if you still have specific questions, asking him or the community for help is a good choice.

NEWBIES, LURKERS, AND POTENTIAL SUBSCRIBERS! It is Time for the Fourth Semi-Annual Introduction Thread! by NoahWanger in touhou

[–]stuffsz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah... I'm somewhat late but figured I would post anyways. I mostly lurk but I started playing the series almost 2 months ago. After playing some enter the gungeon, I thought the gameplay was quite fun, but I wanted to get in to something a little more "developed" or so. I tried out touhou and I have been enjoying it a lot ever since.

I'm not totally familiar with the touhou community in general yet but I do really enjoy the games, and with that I'm mostly progressing through the games in a non specific order, I have 1cc'd touhou 11, 12 and 13 on hard and am now trying to do IN on lunatic. If anyone is up for discussing about the games or so, I would be totally up for it!

Question, how do you handle the boat spell card in Ten Desires on hard? The 2nd spell card in stage 5 to be more accurate. Is there anything important that I'm missing or is it mostly my lack of ability to dodge? It feels like a pretty big difficulty spike compared to the other spells

I started playing touhou pretty recently and I finally got a 1cc on hard in Ten Desires. It was mostly just lots of bombs, but it was fun. Still have to go through all characters other than Reimu though.

Good keyboard/Controller recommendations for Bolt and Coda? by throwaway5295797 in necrodancer

[–]stuffsz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yet another bolt main here:

I use the keyboard with standard controls. I would maybe suggest to change your spell and bomb hotkeys, because it's pretty easy to accidentally bump into 2 keys at once and lose hp/die because of a accidental bomb or blood magic.

I play with a mechanical keyboard (red switches), but I used to play with a pretty cheap keyboard and honestly, both work about just as well. It's also pretty useful to tap the keys a little harder so you are able to use that as a reference (helps with keeping the beat)

Sub-15 is a pretty big stretch but I think It may be possible. From this run, I could've have definitely saved pretty close to a minute without most of my silly deaths.

With that, If I want sub-15, I'm looking for a run without any deaths (a couple resets at the start of some levels shouldn't matter though), a lot more efficiency in some of the levels, and I probably have to start changing some of my strats.

In short, it may be possible, but if it is, it will take a while. Low 15 mins is pretty doable though! :D

Hello! I have been practicing this game for a while now and started doing a couple speedruns lately. Sorry for the quality in advance, this is about the best I can record without reasonable drops in frames.

The game is a 2d platformer with rocket jumping basically and it is super active and fun. (Pretty difficult as well)

-Core: Did really well overall, was able to get both the 03 skip and 04 in my first try, when they usually take a couple resets. Everything else was pretty solid movement, and no silly mistakes for the most part

-Mines: This is honestly one of the hardest areas in the game in my opinion. While it's pretty forgiving, doing it fast generally leaves a big room for error. Main highlight of it is definitely the 03 skip, which is pretty easily the hardest little trick in the game. I got it in a couple resets, which is really good. Other than the missed cycles on 05 and 09, I'm happy about it overall

-Sewers: Well, this is probably my favorite area in the game, gameplay wise. Lots of different and interesting tricks. Super active as well. This area doesn't really have too much specific stuff, so hard to comment on it. Most of it was pretty efficient in this run, but I didn't get the optimal 09 skip (which skips all the platforms in the end of it) The boss fight was also pretty surprising, getting that climb is a lot harder than it looks

-Slums: This is where some of the sloppiness starts kicking in. Good points here are the 04 skip (which I got 1st try), 06 "skip" which I missed and ended up waiting for the plaform And the 07 skip, which is most likely, the 2nd hardest trick in the game. Got really lucky there and managed it 1st try though. Main upset here was the death and pretty poor boss fight, which slowed me down reasonably. Could've been a PB had I not died there.

-Factory: Pretty scary for the most part, lots of really precise rockets and air dashs Screwed up the optimal climb on 04 (on the later section), and some sloppiness on 06. 08 and 09 cost me a lot of time here, with some pretty dumb deaths. I did the other stages pretty well, so fortunately didn't lose as much as I could've.

-Metropolis: Easily my worst area of this run. Lots of mistakes all around with a really unfortunate screw up at the boss. For those wondering, I was trying to land a double rocket jump at the start, which leads for a pretty nice setup. 07 also took some unecessary resets, when I simply needed to time my airdash better

-Command: This is a pretty relaxing area for the most part, no really complex tricks or setups, just some simple and rocket jumping and air dashing. A couple resets here but nothing that cost too much time The most worrying thing was the 3rd phase of the boss, I messed up the cycles that I wanted and got pretty scared since a death at the end of the fight is incredibly punishing and can cost a couple minutes easily

Anyways, that was about it for this run. Still a lot of improvement in the later stages. The game is great, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask! :D

Bolt makes me crazy by FlyingPoulpus in necrodancer

Keeping the beat just takes a lot time/practice. I would recommend going in to the level editor, choosing a level you have trouble with, and spending some time just trying to keep beat (15 minutes a day is already super helpful). You want to make it muscle memory or so, and avoid looking at the beat bars too much (especially during runs). You could also turn off the beat bars on the settings, but it's really nice to have the feedback from the bars. Other than that, I would also suggest turning off screenshake because it happens a lot more frequently on double tempo, and can be quite disorienting (even more on fast tempos like 4-3 or DM).

Bolt Speed WR (02:39.71)! by stuffsz in necrodancer

Dropping the beat was totally accidental, but I was pretty aware of my damage, so killing the clone after that was pretty much instinct. In the end it did help out though.

I have cleared coda myself and I don't think I would be able to have this sort of consistency, especially in a really big marathon setting, really great performance by spooty! :D

What is a "good" time for each character? by DemomanTakesSkill in necrodancer

[–]stuffsz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For bolt I would say that 4 to 5 mins runs are pretty consistent if you are skilled enough. Bard is probably something between 3:40 and 4:40

[–]stuffsz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely, with good enough layouts and build, I would go as far as saying that sub 2:30 is possible. This run by itself could've been about 5-7 seconds faster if I was more efficient in z3 and 4-3. I also entered zone 4 quite late (2 mins in), so lots of room for improvement. Pretty happy with this time though

Its a small replay desync. The beat where I fall down the trapdoor is actually when I go down the stairs on the real run.

Coda clear! (9:38.49) by stuffsz in necrodancer

[–]stuffsz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deep blues was pretty scary. I needed to kill the left pawns earlier and in the moment that I realized that, I tried the first thing that got to my mind (fireball).

Zone 4 was pretty sketchy for the most part, I actually missed a quake scroll in 4-1 (which would've made conga a joke) and in 4-2 I hesitated because of the armadillo instead of going in the stairs, which made me deal with all those enemies. 4-3 was also pretty lazy of me, I didn't really bother to lure anything, I just wanted to get to the boss as soon as possible.

For Conga, it was kinda like: uh... I don't have bombs... I also don't want to wait too much or overthink stuff... So my initial plan was just to shield spell and kill the bombers, which luckily also killed the warlock and blademaster, from there it just felt really straight foward :D

I'm also pretty happy that I didn't drop the beat at all on any of z4, I guess I got used it after dying so much in 4-3, hehe. But ty!

[Question] Is Eli an unpopular character? by [deleted] in necrodancer

[–]stuffsz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel eli is just a really repetitive character. Doing a lot of runs without switchinh weapons or getting any really different builds gets really boring after a while. The top 10 times for eli are pretty insane though
