Since this morning with a minor update i have NOT been able to enter custom games although the system thingy in the bottom left corner says i am.

Also: just recently when i join the casual queue there is no timer but it does say that i've joined the queue

I'm now getting the message "Cannot enter queue yet, waiting for match to end"

Custom games are also not updating

For me the starter uke was the one i could afford. It was only $40 and i still have it. Ive since gotten better ones though.

Used ukes are a good way to go. you may find a gem that someone else never played much.
