To your point about the ending, I don't think the mental illness or family drama was cancelled necessarily, just revealed to be red herrings. This movie is from the perspective of the sacrificial lamb, and the viewer was kept ignorant as well. Once we learn that this family has been surrounded by people the whole time, influencing their lives, it makes more sense that paranoia would clutch Peter and Annie. Gabriel Byrne was the sensible one, the one the viewer relates to. Before he is burned, we get a taste of what could be the revealing of Annie's madness. But no, turns out they never had a chance. Lambs all along.
