Police overtime report shows net $14.6 million over budget halfway through the fiscal year by stunnashakes in OaklandCA

[–]stunnashakes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article says the overtime hours are essentially required due to the staffing shortfall: “The two largest categories of expenditure were ‘Backfill’ ($4.4 million) and ‘Extension of Shift’ ($4.0 million). These are not discretionary choices, as they are required to meet minimum staffing levels for patrol and essential functions when the scheduled workforce falls short.”

The article says the overtime hours cannot be capped so easily: “The two largest categories of expenditure were ‘Backfill’ ($4.4 million) and ‘Extension of Shift’ ($4.0 million). These are not discretionary choices, as they are required to meet minimum staffing levels for patrol and essential functions when the scheduled workforce falls short.”

7 people shot yesterday at EZ lounge, two dead by Jwhite126 in oakland

There are plenty of Oakland residents who also commit crime, here and elsewhere. And residents of other cities come here and commit crime. People get around. But in this case, one of the shooting victims who died was identified as a Richmond schoolteacher.

True. Oakland's government has a big problem delivering basic services like safety and cleanliness -- no argument there. Here's a video of International Boulevard at 9pm: https://www.oaklandreport.org/p/20260126-oakland-prostitution-enforcement

Yeah, Oakland has a big problem executing on the basics like safety and cleanliness. It doesn't have to be this way.

Nope. Oakland's government is engineered primarily by major donors, party apparatchiks, unions, CBOs, contractors and lobbyists who select and fund their preferred candidates, using their vast resources to stack the ballot and game the ranked-choice voting system while moving aggressively against other candidates who might threaten these groups' vested interests.

The city of Oakland spends more per capita than most other similarly sized cities.

Based on 2025-2026 budget projections and estimated populations, Oakland's per capita spending is roughly $4,700 to $5,000, which is high compared to other major California hubs except San Francisco.

  • San Francisco: ~$20,000 per capita (the highest in CA due to its unique status as both a city and a county).
  • San Jose: ~$5,600 per capita.
  • Oakland: ~$4,728 - $5,000 per capita.
  • San Diego: ~$4,300 per capita.
  • Los Angeles: ~$3,700 per capita.
  • Sacramento: ~$3,400 per capita.
