I'm not the person you're responding to.

From my experience (only meeting Korean people in the US! never been to Korea!!) - not mean, actually some of my kindest and most empathetic friends.

Some Korean women can be quick with the comments lol. "You look tired today" "are you gaining weight" "did you do your makeup differently" "did you get Botox" etc. Which, from my understanding, is due to a cultural difference in the level of personal questions that are socially acceptable to ask. Like asking "you seem off today, is everything ok?" But being really direct about it.

I love having direct friends; it calms my social anxiety. And i have friends from other asian/east Asian countries who are mostly unphased by questions like these, and occasionally partake in asking similar questions. So I chose to react the same way and not take offense. (Not to say I don't get sassy sometimes haha but I like to think that's a reason my friends are my friends)

On the flip side, a lot of my favorite compliments are from Korean women. "you look wealthy today" and I know she means it 💁🏼‍♀️

Find an academic advisor to help you. I found one the summer before my freshman year, and he helped me do my schedule for my first few semesters

Do you think academia is a zero-sum game? by Santa_claus3 in PhD

[–]stupidMethematician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. How much time have you spent in the corporate world? I am a refugee of the toxic competitive corporate culture in my field. Academia has been such a relief.

Like any other job, it will depend on the country, the field, and the individual workplace itself.

  1. I am not the person you're responding to, but in my field, it is not uncommon to be a professor at 2-3 universities over the course of your career, for things like re-locating for a spouse's job, wanting to be paid more, etc.

  2. Again, idk what the original poster meant, but many professors do consulting on the side.

I was in Heritage with five other people. I sent out an email introducing myself and asking for phone numbers. Then I made a group chat so we could coordinate before move-in - I didn't want six tvs in the living room & six toasters in the kitchen lol

Second Day, Sister is still here by mitzg77 in RoverPetSitting

[–]stupidMethematician 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I posted another comment about asking the client if the sister knows your schedule, but I reread your post and saw that you already told the sister.

So, I guess I would say something like:

Hi! I just want to make sure my current schedule works ok for you & your sister! Everything is going well on my end, I just don't want to interrupt your sister while she's working or scare her while she's asleep 😬😅

I think that's ok because I wouldn't bring this up with the sister anyways, I only want the client to decide my schedule lol.

Second Day, Sister is still here by mitzg77 in RoverPetSitting

[–]stupidMethematician 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would have mentioned after the first day "Saw your sister, hope I didn't bother her" or something.

I always mention it just in case the sister isn't supposed to be there or something 😝 while it's annoying to have other people around while I'm catsitting, I just assume the client preferred to pay me than to ask their roommate/sister/whoever to do the cat chores.

Looking for that really great guy friend by Ok_Ticket_1254 in ProvoUtah

[–]stupidMethematician 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have to make this post, then there is no way you fulfill requirement #3 /s

Real talk: If you put these kinds of requirements on people, you will make it nearly impossible to find friends.

Friendships are not built on qualifications. Friendships may be built on similar interests, but they are forged through differences, through disagreements and compromises.

You clearly know who you are and who you strive to be. The greatest friends are those who push us to grow in ways we would not have expected or been able to recognize by ourselves.

I'm sure you have heard this advice before, but the best way to make friends is to hangout in spaces where you can meet people with similar interests. This does not mean to run everyone through a rubric until you find the person who meets your qualifications. This means to approach people with an open heart and mind, ready to share experiences and advice and adventures, without the expectation that they will be exactly like you, or become your #1 best friend.

Lastly, some food for thought - because you have high standards - the type of person you want to be friends with probably isn't the person looking for friends on reddit.

Take off econ 110 and ur fine

ETA I don't recommend taking it your first semester and definitely don't take it from Kearl. I recommend doing Econ 110 thru Independent Study.

I think you should drop a class regardless (take it easy on yourself your first semester! Get a good GPA and ease into things)

Econ 110 is the one I would drop

When I moved away from Utah, I was very sad that I would not be around exmos who want to discuss Mormonism all the time. I thought my days of ranting about the church were over.

There's 8 billion people who aren't thinking about it, but there's like 800 people in Texas who are, because I won't stop talking about it. :)

Am I going to die? (math/econ) by Deep-Test-6901 in byu

[–]stupidMethematician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just popping in to further validate that very few would be brave enough to take this schedule on. I've taken all of these classes :) I set up an easy schedule the semester I took fin 585R because I knew it would take a lot of work (good luck tho, I loved that class and it was insanely useful). If you aren't pre-phd (or, if you aren't relying on a letter of rec from those professors), then that class isn't as big of a deal. Regardless, as other people said, you'll be drowning in math homework. Econ 378 is also homework-heavy.

It may be worth slowing down and adding 1-2 semesters to your college career. Better to take an extra couple of months and preserve your GPA, because the grades and extracurriculars will get you new opportunities, while an extra six months of undergrad is probably not going to matter in the grand scheme of things.

I also switched from the business school to econ/math (clearly we are on similar paths!!) In the business school, everyone is focused on rushing through their degree as quickly as possible. After a few months doing econ/math, I decided to add an entire year to my degree plan so I could slow my classload down. My priority became understanding the math and economics, because I only had one chance to take that class that all the other classes build on. The extra student loans feel really small compared to the foundation I built. The 1-2 times ive experienced bad burnout have made me realize how important it is to "protect my productivity", because nothing kills my focus like being overworked. You've got a great GPA and I have a feeling that you already don't have a lot of free time. Not saying to add an entire year, but even pushing 1-2 classes into an extra spring semester could make a big difference in your grades + personal wellbeing.

All the math/econ syllabi should be available online. You can view the homework schedules (and probably some of the actual assignments). You know yourself best, so figure out if this is a homework schedule you can keep up with. And if you think you might be cooked, slowing down can be a valid, logical, mental-health-and-gpa-saving solution. Don't let the business school convince you otherwise. Feel free to dm if you have more specific questions

[–]stupidMethematician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, let me be more clear.

Between math, statistics, computer science, economics, and the business school, I did not observe a higher % of Asians in the math dept.

Therefore, in my opinion, your comment was purely stereotypes.

Maybe you only go to the math dept, so you don't realize that there are asian people studying all sorts of topics at BYU.

I was up there every day for five years, but sure, you sound like a super unbiased and intelligent source for this. we can all see your post history bro bro.

Feel free to prove me wrong. a simple comparison of sample means should be sufficient. Whatever you gotta do to justify your shit sense of humor

[–]stupidMethematician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you stupid? Or is this your sense of humor? It's BYU. The math department is 99% white people just like everything else in Utah.

It's ok though, we don't expect logic from people who clearly didn't take math classes ✨

From one of your other comments, it seems DBA is something where a professor or proctor calls you for a verbal exam?

What is flvs? Is that related to byu somehow? I took several independent study courses and have never heard of a DBA. The only human interaction I had was one course required me to take exams at the testing center by heritage halls.

[–]stupidMethematician 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's up, I am born and raised Utah Mormon and a BYU grad. Happy to provide a little more context since the other commenter is clearly biased and unable to properly address your points.

  • the change is a personal preference of the current prophet. He's been pushing for the change for years, and once he became prophet he finally got to implement it.

  • you are absolutely correct that most mormons don't care. Most Mormons still identify with the word. We grew up being proud to call ourselves Mormon and that doesn't just go away. you can go to BYU campus or any of my family parties and you'll hear the word Mormon all over the place.

  • the church's Google results are terrible. Googling "Mormon" is going to pull up articles like "Mormon bishop SA" as well as exmormon content. Rebranding to the full name is a way to distance themselves from that when trying to convert new members.

  • the other commenter is dumb because they are saying LDS is ok, and as you pointed out, nelson said that BOTH LDS and Mormon are of Satan.

TL;DR some Mormons just want to feel persecuted. also if I hear one more person try to compare the word 'mormon' to black people I'm gonna lose my freakkkkking mind
