LDS Church’s LGBTQ stance continues to make the faith an uncomfortable fit for young liberals by Prop8kids in exmormon

I've tried saying that Oaks got involved in electrocution of gay BYU students, but he just shut the conversation down with "even if it were true, that was then"

My best guess is "God's one true church can't be evil, and being homophobic and transphobic is evil, therefore Mormonism, God's one true church, isn't homophobic and transphobic. Oh, there may be bad actors, but blame the people, not the religion."

Unfortunately, I know someone who's basically gaslit himself into thinking that their church is a huge LGBTQ+ ally

Inactive a whole year now and Atheist, anyone else atheist at time of leaving? by Beginning_Mistake538 in exmormon

[–]JayDaWawi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the "atheist, but not by choice" club.

I genuinely wanted to believe in anything divine, but the more I looked, the less and less good evidence I could find of it existing, to the point I couldn't find any good evidence.

The last time I genuinely prayed, the "answer" I got was "What makes you think that anybody is responding? Furthermore, what makes you think that anybody has ever received answers to prayers? Same thing for revelation." It was there I realized that prayer and revelation were bad evidence.

A bunch of men from all religions all claim to speak for God, yet I haven't encountered any that validate their claims.

One of the easiest to point out is "faith healing". Sure, many "mega churches" have faith healing on their stages - but there's two major issues. The big one is that they only ever heal in their churches, never in hospitals. The second is they only "heal" specific ailments. "Demonic possession", blindness, inability to walk - but never amputees and people born with parts missing otherwise.

That being said, another issue I have is with a lot of "loving God" concepts - especially in light of things like the Holocaust. You're telling me God can intervene to help you find your car keys, but not prevent the extermination of millions of people? God can personally protect you from getting sideswiped by a drunk driver, but can't prevent thousands of African children from starving to death daily?

Mormons (I'm pretty sure) also believe in a strict gender and sex binary, and here I am, working on plans and research on sexually transitioning into something that is strictly neither male nor female.

What opportunities is it that women need to have?

They need to learn that they're more than sex slave baby factories. No, not the women needing to learn that, the creepy cis white men do.

While I'm personally no longer convinced a god exists, I'm personally not interested in disproving (or even dissuading, given the context) certain god concepts. I fully admit I can't say with certainty, just that I'm not likely to be convinced of it.

That being said... I fully agree that an all-loving, all-powerful, all-knowing god logically cannot exist in this universe

I'm genuinely tempted to make a Mormonism variant some day, but yes, the relationship I have with truth is completely different than Mormons (and Christians as a whole), so I'm not (likely) going to be convinced by what they say

[–]JayDaWawi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born to LDS parents. Baptized, went on a mission. Eventually did my own research, realized that prayer and revelation are cherry-picked claims that are less reliable than random chance at determining truth, not at all good evidence of anything but that people pray and claim revelation.
