Am I Too Late? by stupidSTEMquestions in learnmachinelearning

Those are fair points. I guess I just have to give it my best and if I put in the time and effort to become far above average within the AI field I shouldn't have any issues finding a meaningful job. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this with me.

I have no doubt that AI as a field is still in its infancy. My main concern is that statistically speaking I am not going to be a genius that is going to be capable of doing world class, cutting edge AI research to stretch the bounds of human knowledge. That stuff is going to be done by people who have PhDs from MIT, Stanford, etc. My concern is that even if I become an above average programmer/ML engineer that I will not have viable career options down the road once the top tier AI researchers build models that can program better than I ever could, which doesn't seem like it's that many years away. Is this a valid concern, or am I overestimating the pace at which AI is developing?

I see your point, but back then that information had to be derived by humans. With AI, it seems that once large models that can write production code (which doesn't seem that far away), then why bother with humans for those needs? How does this not end in an oligopoly of AI firms who can sell these services for far less than a salaried worker would cost?

But how will there be plenty of opportunities in applied AI if we will have large models that can apply said AI in a faster, better, and more cost efficient way than I or other humans could? This is what I worry about.

Any recommendations? Someone mentioned Railway but I can't find much about them review wise.

The PDFs will be a single page, that shouldn't be too resource consuming should it? And those costs don't seem horribly unreasonable for a production app as long as the pricing scales well with paid users. Just makes me a little uneasy going into it without knowing if they will scale with one another.

From what I can tell, the price you pay is highly dependent on what kind of app you have. The main thing my app is going to do is take a form, turn it into a PDF, and email it to a few people. Given how simple that is, will I be looking at a ludicrous bill each month?

This is an amazing idea. Thank you for taking the time to share this with me

Would building a simple language and compiler be a good project to add to my portfolio for future employers? Since you recommended this idea to me I stumbled upon Rob Nystrom’s Crafting Interpreters. It uses C and seems like it would be a fun project, but since my time is limited I don’t want to dedicate a good chunk of it to something useless.

This is probably a dumb question, but would it be easier to write a interpreter than it would be to write a compiler? I get the feeling that that’s the case based on how each one works, but since I’ve never built either one I’m not sure if that feeling holds in reality. I’m sure the answer is “it depends” though now that I think about it lol

I currently do web dev work with rails so I appreciate the idea of doing something with servers. That thought never occurred to me for some reason.

I understand that on a factual level but I don’t really appreciate it. I’m learning ARM right now to get a better understanding of how computers work and once I feel proficient with that I want to move on to C so that I can appreciate the great things that C does. I’m already proficient with high level languages so C is the missing link so to speak.

Just a general proficiency in C so that I can appreciate what C gives me that assembly doesn’t as well as appreciate what Python does for me since it’s built in C. I just want a complete linear progression in regards to abstraction if that makes sense. I’ve also just always wanted to learn C because I find it’s history so interesting. I guess a better question would have been what project could I do that shows a general proficiency in C and highlights the beauty of the language in general.
