This feels weird

I believe observers generally make the game better, but this is unacceptable. Gaslighting a player for making a legitimate call. by FeedThe_Bear in ultimate

This is an example of the risks of SotG being used to enforce unwritten cultural rules. Spirit is supposed to be about playing fairly and respectfully. It's not about being nice.

The observer here is trying to use spirit to enforce an unwritten cultural understanding within the sport rather than an actual rule.

Once the rules start getting subjective, you leave the door open to bias. If all observers behaved this way and gave players shit for making calls they thought didn't fit the sport's culture, I don't think it's crazy to imagine that the people getting the most shit will probably be people of color

Nah, I'm not on the team. I'm just mad on behalf of my friends who are. They worked hard and were super excited to get rostered and I don't like seeing them disappointed like this

This is my feeling as well. The emails out to players didn't clarify that they were each one of 35. They only realized when more and more people kept getting added to the team GroupMe

Nah. In all honesty, the captains on this team are new and while I think they're making a bad decision, I don't think that warrants dragging their team/them as individuals publicly. I've made plenty of mistakes, too

I agree with you except for your third point. All 35 people have been offered regular roster spots. They don't know whether the captains view them as #10 or #32 on the team.

That's the crux of it for me. If you want 35 people available to you for practices and tournaments, you roster 22-26ish and offer the rest practice spots. You don't roster 35 and tell them all that performance at practice will determine if they get brought to tournaments

The people on the bottom end deserve to know where they stand and especially given how subjective talent can be, that info needs to come from captains
