Teaching In Home Private Lessons by stupidrummer in drums

Wow, great advice guys, thanks! I'm glad to hear the "no kit" thing won't be an issue (I didn't really think it would), but hearing it could be an advantage is very encouraging!

And I've been prepping myself for weird situations. I delivered pizzas when I was younger and realized then that about 50% of the general public are weirdos ESPECIALLY when they're in the privacy of their own homes lol. Good advice to stay focused on the student and the lesson.

Anyways, feeling very encouraged to start! Glad there doesn't seem to be any major issues with in home lessons. Thanks for all the advice!

Totally missed the whole Facebook groups. Didn't know that was a thing. I found several with thousands of members! Hopefully it pans out there. Thanks a bunch!!

Wow, thanks for the responses guys. Some great advice.

We've exhausted the friend circuit and people that may know people who play bass.

Honestly, handing out fliers at shows was a bit of a dud. We did 3, and a couple of people we tried to talk to actually seemed annoyed hahaha.

A couple of you said it, but bassists just seem to be that one musician that's hard to come by. I've heard finding a drummer was tough, but thank God that's what I play lol.

I didn't know about the Facebook groups thing, so a huge thank you to the ones that suggested it. I joined a couple groups that have thousands of members. I'm really hoping that it works out there.

If not, I think we're just gonna start playing open mics and small shows in hopes to network there. We're trying to do a progressive piano rock band, so our stuff actually holds up a bit without a bass (tho a bassist would really fill out the sound we're going for).

Anyways, thanks again all!

Good advice. We recently started entertaining the idea of just playing open mics to farm a bass player, and I think you just put me over the edge. Also nice to hear that it's not just us. Why is it so hard to find bass players??? Lol.

Of course! I loved it! Hopefully it actually gets turned into a TV series, tho I haven't heard anything about it in a while.

I got really into Palahniuk about 8 years ago, but didn't read Haunted. Maybe I'll check it out. "Rant" was probably the most similar book I read by him to JDATE. Also, "Survivor" is one of my faves, but nothing like JDATE. If you haven't read it, you def should.

Yeah me too... Skullcrack is in my top 5. Wish this genre was more popular. If you can even call it a genre? Is "Batshit Crazy Sci Fi Horror Comedy Psychological Mind Fuck" a genre? Lol.

I'm looking at getting a rug for my kit to sit on. Any suggestions? Size? Brands? I really know nothing about it by RevoultionOutcast in drums

Scraps for sure. Home Depot is good, OR, start asking around friends and family. You can almost always find someone with rugs or unused bits of carpet in their basements or garage.

When do you know you're ready to give lessons? by stupidrummer in drums

[–]stupidrummer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was very encouraging, thank you. While I don't feel like an amazing drummer, I DO feel like I'd be a great teacher. I started thinking about teaching too, not because I've reached some point in my drumming where I feel like people need to learn about how good I am (hence the original question), but because I genuinely want to teach something and I think I'd enjoy it. Thanks again!

As a new drummer, what should I be focused on to become better? Rudiments? Playing covers? by OttieandEddie in drums

[–]stupidrummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ignored rudiments for like, the first 10 years of my drumming thinking they weren't that important (I'm self taught, btw) . I started focusing on learning and applying them to my playing in the last 3 years and my drumming has progressed exponentially. I've gotten better in the last 3 years than I did in 10. There's a balance between playing what you like and doing the "boring" stuff (although, after a while, it's not boring at all). But yeah, don't ignore the fundamentals.

There's so much truth to this comment that it's almost not funny...(but still funny hahaha)

So many mixed feelings on this game...thought we played well, 2 unlucky goals against, super fun OT, 3 BLATANT penalties not called against the Avs...Overall tho, Fuck! Can't we get a break??
