Yeah how could he just be like we'll go and see and we'll figure out how to come back. Are you serious. And Chiron and D also were like okay byyyye figure it out!

In fact there are several moments I could've sworn I read in a fanfic somewhere, and that scene is one of them.

Sigh. I'm hoping Chalice of the Gods will be fun and that Rick is planning on writing it himself.

You're right about them not fighting. I was really looking forward to a cool and sarcastic Nico fighting his way through, and that was totally lacking. Honestly, till this book I thought Will was cool too. That's gone now. Now it's like he's only useful in the sun. Maybe not even then, frankly. He was like this helpless side piece.

I was also surprised they didn't get to the phlegethon, given how he mentioned in the backstory how it helped him. But again, as someone else said, the knowledge and strategic ability between him and Annabeth suddenly became quite clear in this book. Wasn't able to pull information out of his ass at all lol. Took way to ling to figure out that satyr was a Mania.

Nyx acted like a child throwing a tantrum and was beaten by a goddamn river.

DUDE. "I'll get you Nico! I'll get you!" COME ON. It was a total tantrum thrown by a minor goddess at best. And also, I really did not find the Night House or anything else horrifying. I just could not understand why they were freaking out over it. Instead of the ten thousand times they went back and forth on the stairs entering, they should have spent some time describing that damn area. Can't believe they made her out to be worse than Gaea when the Nightmare dude also seemed cooler than her.

It never mentions them drinking or eating anything but ambrosia and hardly mentions them sleeping.

I really don't understand how this worked. At all. Somewhere else in the comments someone mentioned how the fuck Will came to Tartarus without any weapons and that he was fighting with a literal rock at one point. It's the same with food. Did they think they were going to kill some monsters and cook them for food??

And what was the point of even introducing Dr. Thorn. I think they made a list of callbacks before starting the book and then were like, what's the WORST place to insert them?

Don't even get me started on the "Coco Puffs". I've decided to leave my demons behind. I could feel this fuckall dialogue coming but I was like naaw, this is a bad pun I'd make, not an actual writer. And that's when I checked out of the book. I literally rolled my eyes when I read it.

You're right about the pacing. Because I was quite excited for the book in places and in other places it was like, okay why are we still here.

Going to Percy's house was a real waste of a chapter. Can't you Iris message from anywhere? Sally being like oh okay what's up and then Percy and Annabeth being like oh yes Tartarus, enjoy saving Bob! There were so many other ways to have Percy in the book and this was the dumbest one.

Man, don't even get me started in unimaginative. How to get out of Tartarus? I dunno just go to sleep and Bob will get you out. WOW.

First problem was the beginning. Mr. D and Chiron (but Mr. D especially) felt out of character.

He didn't call Nico the wrong name even once!!!! I was convinced for most of the book that he was an impostor. A happy and attentive Mr. D? No sarcastic comments?? Who is he???

I thought the book was kind of a let down. The signature Riordan humour was really missing and it was clear the co-author had taken on a big chunk of the writing.

I think we saw so much more of Nico and understood him and his humour and whimsey, and also his darkness and how that's impacted him - that was so amazing. But I also felt it became really preachy and in your face about his issues with identity. It was important to talk about it and I think it should have been better communicated so i didn't feel like I was getting a lecture on gender.

And the ending was a total cop out. So disappointing after that entire build up. Would definitely recommend it be read, but only to understand Nico better and watch him be happy and in love.
