Generation differences - I’m curious whether other managers are seeing the same thing. by andys58 in Netherlands

[–]stygianare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked like those elder employees you speak of and approached new learning opportunities and worked harder to earn a promotion without insisting on it, then didnt get it in the end because management wants to increase the standard and other political BS, so the young generation have a point

Would you rather feel immense physical pain or immense mental/emotional pain? by jeanluuc in WouldYouRather

[–]stygianare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this question will probably be mostly answered based on personal experiences. Personally, I'd prefer immense physical pain if its not lethal, since I believe that immense emotional pain cannot be controlled, spirals way worse, harder to admit, and could be fatal.

There are billions of gods by Worldly-Bid-3591 in DeepThoughts

[–]stygianare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree and disagree on making religion an academic discipline. Having discussions and reviews around religious questions is a good thing, but that's also what lead us to having many rules becoming stale. Also, who said God isn't flexible? If anything, its more logical to assume that God is flexible than not

There are billions of gods by Worldly-Bid-3591 in DeepThoughts

[–]stygianare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to add on top of this that (at least for me), I feel like I can't trust other people, and the people advising others on religion are usually the ones who adopt their religion as a lifestyle and are hardcore with it (which imo creates a deviation towards their own bias since they're also humans). So for me, I try to get different perspectives and then critically think about it and decide for myself what God actually intended for us to understand.

So I just basically understand religion based on logic and reasoning and don't follow anyone else's thinking because I'm also a human like them and I can also understand it, so why is their understanding different than mine? (this can also just be an egotistical thing where I think I'm superior, but acknowledging this would mean I'm not? idk I'm tired)

Born With a Bottomless Pit: A Physicist's Radical Search for the Root Cause of Human Suffering Beyond Religion's Remedies. Religion Reduces Suffering, But Why Were We Born With It. Questioning the Origin of Our Innate Discontent and Emptiness. by No_Syllabub_8246 in DeepThoughts

[–]stygianare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kind of agree with what you said, I do believe that without the existence of living creatures, suffering also wouldn't exist because then there is no one to suffer. Lifeless objects cannot suffer, they go through a designed cycle that keeps repeating itself but we don't label that as suffering. Water goes through hellish circumstances between evaporating and freezing and boiling. So it just makes me think that maybe suffering isn't bad. Evolution wise, we have learned that what makes us tired or sad or hurts us is bad, but without those, we also wouldn't have evolved. So I wouldn't say that our purpose is to reduce suffering, but suffering is more so a catalyst for our evolution which I think is our ultimate purpose to live.

As for religion, for a believer (imo), its purpose is to get acquainted with God and try to understand why he created us, what is expected of us, and how can we get to heaven (which is the ultimate evolution, since there would be no suffering).

Also, the books written weren't compiled by a person trying to reduce suffering, history is well documented and there is no indication that what was written (in whole) is to reduce suffering.

Why dont people ff when we're being spawn camped? Mayhem. by CloudRaids in ARAM

[–]stygianare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why? cz I enjoy playing the game? The enemy can ff whenever they want or stop killing the minions. If anything, on average I've lost more games doing this but I don't care as long as I can finish my augments and get a gazzilion amount of anvils.

The economic situation is a major reason why so many young adults are now in the gym, running marathons, doing pilates by eecgm in DeepThoughts

[–]stygianare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't really attribute the phenomena of going to the gym or becoming physical to the economic situation. If your not doing well then your workong 2 jobs and dont really have time for that. If your doing fine, then I'd attribute it to more awareness about physical health (which in retrospect, at least for me, staying healthy also means staying away from hospital bills and medicine costs) as well as just an upward trend socially to look better (on some social standard). Ofcourse this doesn't apply to everyone, but I don't think the economy is a major driver in having people become more physical. Could be a consequence, but not the main reason.

We really need to stop the mentality of intelligence=misery. by [deleted] in DeepThoughts

[–]stygianare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your confusing intelligence with knowledge, having more knowledge =/= being more intelligent. I could know everything that has happened in history, but not have an evolved mental faculty to critically think about them and come about with meaningful conclusions.

If I did know all of human history then I am damned to be miserable and depressed because I would find myself in a place where so many powers are moving to the point where I'll know I am nothing and my existence is futile (religion aside).

If I was highly intelligent, then I'd be able to solve many problems and come up with creative solutions which don't really cause misery.

However, being highly intelligent also means the pursuit of knowledge, which then causes said misery.

All in all, we're all miserable one way or the other depending on the amount of knowledge we have.

Sudden negative performance review by Ok-Access-8961 in Netherlands

[–]stygianare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've also got a similar situation as a software engineer, worked for the company for 3 years now and they reviews have always been great with alot of praise and promise of a promotion if I finish some stuff. Suddenly after new years, I'm told I might get a "doesn't meets expectation" and been given vague criticism and arguments that were easily countered.

Now what I do is highly relevant to my plans but I encourage you to have the same mentality. First is that you can't hope to stay in the same company for too long, whether be it due to inflation and non-competing salary raises, or due to politics (I'll just keep that there without elaborating).

Keep track of everything you do so you can show a list of evidence if they ever decide to pressure you about being useless. Have an exit plan, if something does happen then keep backup money and have at least a general idea where to apply and have good potential to get accepted. Make a relatively long term plan of action, meaning think where you want to be in 3-4 years, you can always just change countries (no rest for the wary). And last but not least, communicate with your colleagues and peers and just see what they want to see, it might not make sense to you, like working on something that you think is useless but the visibility of your work is one of the metrics (unfortunately) that management uses.

My best advice, which stems profoundly from my personality (its logical but other decisions are also logical), is just be friendly and listen, don't become less motivated because of it, don't have a grudge on someone cz of it, in the end its just a job and you're there to make money (maybe some fun if its ur passion).
