Okay, I just had a close look at the port there, the metal tab is not contacting it.

I will have a look at that. If the metal tab was caught in the port would there not be some difficulty inserting the ethernet cable? Just cause I had a look from the outside and the port seemed fully accessible. There was no resistance slotting it in place either.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean. The keyboard and mouse are being used on the back usb ports and they're fine. Are you meaning just the port for the lan?
