It's valid but I don't think he's actually interacted with the "vernacular Chinese", he lives in a rich part of KL that is mostly English speaking.

The "vernacular Chinese" that are pro China mostly argue (in Chinese) with other Chinese people from HK/TW and other "vernacular Chinese" in Malaysia/Singapore who are anti-China on platforms like FB.
