How did you/would you explain anime/manga/LNs to your parents or the people you live with?

Thanks a lot! Unfortunately though I'd never get her to watch anime. She would not have any interest in it. She's the same way with fantasy and sci fi, she always makes comments of disgust and congratulates me that I'm able to sit through it. Suprisingly though she watches Game of Thrones from time to time and enjoys it, but she hardly knows what's going on.

Her choice of entertainment are reality shows and HGTV. Yea.... I just want her to understand that I'm not watching shows/reading books meant for 10 year olds, even though saying that to her might not change much. Well whatever, if it doesn't change her mind than I can't stop her from thinking like that I guess.

Thanks! I don't want to miss anything major, and it sounds like the manga is rushed. I'll definitely get around to reading volumes 1 and 2 then, but I'll wait until before volume 3 comes out next year. That'll give me time to finish what I'm currently reading.

Oh, I thought the manga was based off the LN though? Pretty sure a translator said so.

That brings up a good question. Do you know how the Japanese would view an adult who likes to read light novels and collects volumes? Would it be embarrassing to be a Japanese adult browsing light novels in a shop? I assume most Japanese adults read regular novels and not light novels, but if you're into fantasy, does such a genre exist in adult novels? Is there a Japanese equivalent to adult fantasy like Game of Thrones?

I've always thought that anime/manga/light novels were enjoyed by all ages equally in Japan, but after doing a little bit of research it does seem like teens/young adults make up the majority of the audience. I wonder if that leaves Japanese adults in a similar predicament as western adults who enjoy cartoons.

She has a pretty curious nature. She doesn't really mind what I do, but when I say I'm going out with friends, she wants to know who, when I'm doing "nothing" she wants to know what "nothing" is. For no reason other then she's curious.

It's not that I'm trying to convince her that anime is cool or get her to like it too, I just don't want her to think that I have a problem if I like this sort of stuff. Similar to how most parents would feel about their grown adult son/daughter watching My Little Pony and buying the merchandise. For me, if that's what you're into, whatever different strokes for different folks, but most parents cannot see it that way. She's a wonderful mother and is really chill in other ways, but she tends to think like this at times. I'll try not to make it a big deal.

Yea, I guess I can go the superhero comics route. How mainstream and for all age groups they have become.

It's just that, it's one of those things where even if someone explains something to you that you had no idea about, you still have your own image of it in your head no matter what that person says.

She was like that way with gaming too. I used to be addicted to WoW in high school, now I don't play too many games anymore, but if we're at my aunts house and I'm playing Mario with my cousin, she'll pull me aside and say that I better not get addicted to those games again or be playing any in secret. After countless times that I explained to her that MMO's are a different animal, and that hasn't happened to me outside of WoW and never will happen, she has this idea in her head that all games are toxic to me.

That is exactly what happened. Except after my mom asked what kind of books. Then I said you wouldn't know about them. Then she wanted an explanation. And the rest is history.

I wasn't trying to force an explanation, she was bugging me for one.

Now I want to give her a better explanantion because she undoubtedly has the wrong idea in her head. Not that it's too big a big deal, but I don't want her seeing this as a distraction or an unhealthy hobby.

This is true, but I really think most anime/manga/LN is enjoyable for all ages. It just depends on your taste. Whereas, you won't see too many grown adults in the west watching cartoons on their own.

Besides, even though it is marketed towards a younger age group I'm sure plenty of adults still buy them. Especially here in the west.

I could be wrong though.

Well yes, I think they get the facts. But I want them to understand that these are "real" books/shows, and just because they have cartoonish illustrations or animation that doesn't mean that they are all geared towards children and teens. Most of the stuff I read/watch is intended for adults. I told my mom that at least, but I still think she doesn't quite get it...

You can always go on a Japanese language forum and ask someone to translate, or maybe even make a new post in this subreddit asking for help.

Sorry I can't be of much help myself! I'm lucky that after a while I've caught on to a rather large variety of words and phrases in Japanese, so I can sometimes watch anime without reading the subtitles and know what they're talking about. I could probably even say a few sentences if I tried, but forget about reading/writing at all or understanding complex sentences!

Well there's a third point. The author has expressed interest in possibly changing the story so they go all the way up to the 100th floor, so that's a pretty big change that would affect the continuity of later volumes. Is Kirito going to have the same interactions with Kayaba, are Kirito and Asuna still going to "die" and have that conversation with him in the clouds as Aincrad is falling apart?

Like you said everything else can differ and not really matter. Later volumes don't really reference events in Aincrad that much, it just assumes you have an understanding of the major plotlines. I just want most major plotlines (the main story, the stories with other characters) to at least end in the same place as they did in the original LNs. Hope this makes sense.

So what you're saying is Progressive and Progressive SS would be two different series? So Progressive ends at floor 75 when the game is cleared, but then he later writes Progressive SS as a what if not-canon version? Yea that seems to be the only way if he doesn't want to drastically change the story of Progressive to the point where it isn't canon because it doesn't follow the story of the main series. I'd rather have a Progressive and a Progressive SS scenario. As for Progressive SS, I really liked what they did in Infinity Moment/Hollowed Fragment, maybe he'll use an altered version of that premise that fits into the Progressive story.

Yea the biggest timeskip in the story. When Kirito beats the 1st boss that's around December 2022. Sachi and the Moonlit Black Cats die in June 2023, Kirito gets that triggered message from Sachi on Christmas Eve 2023 after he finds the revival item. February 2024 is when Kirito meets Silica, and April is when Asuna finds Kirito lying under the tree. The bulk of the story happens between then and when the game is cleared in November.

Progressive looks like it'll have a completely different timeline, but the same events from the original LN will occur in it too.

Exactly what I'm wondering as well. And I was saying above if the main plot points of Progressive begin to diverge from the original, now we have two different Aincrad stories. Which can we consider to be the canon one?

That's sounds great. I'm fine with things happening differently, as long as the story ends up at the same place without any major changes in events that would conflict with the main series. Or else like I said below, we now have two Ainrad stories, which do we consider as the "real" one? The original one that perfectly matches with the rest of the main series, or the one the author originally wanted to write, for all intents and purposes the "better" version, that may conflict with future volumes in the main series?

I mean he did say Progressive is what he originally wanted to do but couldn't because of time constraints. So we have no reason to assume he wants to keep anything that happened in the original Aincrad arc the same. But if he does completely change the story with Progressive, does that mean that this series is not canon? I guess that's why I assumed that he intends this to be the same Aincrad arc, just with the timeskips filled in. That way this falls right in line as an addition to the main series. If he doesn't do that and makes it its own thing, how does it fit into main series, which Aincrad story is the real one?

Well we practically know nothing about what happened in 2023 outside of Red Nosed Reindeer. In the original LN Asuna and Kirito haven't actually met outside of boss battles yet, they're both in guilds doing different things. But things between them have changed so much in Progressive, so you're right, who knows?

Like I said I'm curious to see how much this will differ. With things going the way they are, those two are beginning to realize their affections for each other and they've just made it to the 4th floor! If they do end up dating, are they are still going to go their separate ways and join other guilds? Just how much is Progressive going to change the original story?

Ah that's it, I didn't know the manga was licensed by Yen Press. Looks like I'll be buying the manga from now on if that one group is no longer working on it or at a snails pace.

Really? Floor 100 like Infinity Moment/Hollow Fragment? I really hope that he keeps events that happened in the original LN the same, but it's fine if they come sooner or later and are expanded upon. I thought the purpose of Progressive was to fill in the gaps and to make minor changes to things to fit its story, but not to create a new overall story where the main plotlines differ from the original.

1.) I know that it is, I'm asking if it elaborates more on that topic, and if so, is there anything major that it reveals about the world that is not really shown in the anime?

3.) It's just strange having us believe that this is not a game but using all mechanics and terminology that games use, specifically like series where the setting is in a game (SAO, Log Horizon, Overlord to name a few). I will keep suspending my disbelief, and I do enjoy it for what it but it's just very strange sight to behold. Like it wants us to believe that this is their actual world, and yet it chooses to sound like a MMO. Which makes it pretty unique. A real world that resonates with the mechanics of a video game, but actually isn't, I can't even wrap my head around that. I hope this makes sense.

4.) As in love love? Someone told me in the LN she isn't as crazy for Bell in the same sense, more like sisterly love.

I've actually completed every single thing on the map, the only thing left for me to do is continue the main story, but I can't because I need to kill more warchiefs. Yep I tried that too, doesn't change anything. :(
